Health issue, and i was wondering if frozen mice etc in the freezer with human consumption foods, can it be a disease type carryover? I just need a clear thought on this, or a piece of mind...help?:headbang:

Nope, if there are any bacteria or parasites on the mice, even if they come in direct contact with other frozen food, it won't matter. Having frozen mice in the freezer is just like having any other frozen meat, I would think.

Freesing the mice gets rid of bacteria/anything harmful anyway.

I have a designated tupperware to keep my pinkies in, so they never come in contact with the rest of the things in my freezer. I would be inclined to think that if the mice would make me sick they have a good chance of making my snake sick... although this is just kind of a guess.
also, most pinkies bred for food are done so in captivity to keep out desiese from wild rodents and such, right?
I live with a guy who wont eat ketchup if its left out of the fridge too long ...lol...convincing him it was ok to have mice in the freezer was hard...but i alredy keep frozen bloodworms for my fish, in yet another containor. my pets get more freezer space than i do!

I keep them separate only because I prefer guests to not have to be shocked when opening my freezer. PErsonally don't matter to me, some folks however get grossed out.

I keep my mice out of contact with everything else in the bottom shelf in a brown paper bag... that way no one gets grossed out.

I keep my mice, and all of the food in my freezer for that matter, sealed well. I keep my mice on a separate shelf but only because of the way my freezer is set up.

mine stay in the newspaper i got them in in my food freezer.... don't even come in contact with anything in there other then the newspaper

I never worrried about getting sick. I guess if you handled the rodents and didn't wash your hands before eating, that's the only way I can think that it would get you sick.

i jus keep mine ina bag in the freezer like with the food and iv had no problems , my mam been a nurse and my bro been a trainey doctor both say theres nuthin to worry about lol :p

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. I keep mice in my freezer with my regular food. I keep everything wrapped and seperate, which should be fine.

Unfortunately, freezing does not kill bacteria or anything harmful. The only thing that does that, is cooking. Freezing just slows or stops the growth of bacteria. Puts it in kind of a cryogenic state. That's why, when dealing with thawed mice, you have to adhere to safe food handling practices.

To the OP; I don't think keeping mice in your freezer is making you sick. As long as you are practicing a safe food handling protocol, you should be fine.

Safe food handling is not keeping food in the danger zone (41-140F), for more then four hours.

Good Luck and I hope you feel better,

Wayne

I've been stockpiling lizards and mice in freezers since the mid 1970's. Well wrapped and sealed.

I'm sure I overdo it with the handwashing and the 91% isopropyl alcohol sitting around the bathroom and kitchen (and in the office at work, too).
Working in a lab too long. Yes, I am certifiably crazy.
