Is my mouse sick

Hey all, How is ev1. Quick question. One of my female mice is acting different. She NEVER goes into the nest anymore, she is ingnorning her babies <the other female is feeding them> she ignores the male and other female. Was wondering if she is sick or something. She had her babies days ago now and not showing any signs of being pregnant again. Which is strange cause she is a excellent breeder. Haves 13 - 15 babies every 21 days. Should I just kill her off or wait and see. Thanks all.

Why don't you quarantine her for a while and see. IMO I disagree with feeding live not only because of the risks to the snakes, but because of the stress of the mouse. I love snakes, but I love all animals, and I hate to see people keeping breeding mice who euthanise them in cruel ways and don't care about looking after them properly and making them happy while they are alive. I'm not saying you are one of these people - but killing off your poor mouse just because she isn't giving birth every 21 days isn't very nice. You'd probably be sick if you gave birth that much too!

How old is the female? They DO slow down as they get older, and sometimes they do stop producing, too.

Other than abandoning her nest, is she showing any other odd behaviour? Particularly anything like hunched back huddling, any sign of being bullied or nipped?

I don't think it was implied at all that the mouse would be fed live to a snake...I have to cull my adult mice sometimes too but I do kill them first.

I keep breeding mice and have experimented a few ways to find the quickest, least cruel way to kill them. I love all animals too. And I assure you my mice receive the very best care possible! People ALWAYS comment on how sleek, shiney and what perfect condition my mice in.

She also didn't say that she wanted to kill the mouse because it wasn't giving birth every 21 days (which is more or less what happens in the wild BTW), on the contrary, she stated that the mouse WAS breeding well.

It's perfectly normal for mice to take care of each other's litters, so I wouldn't be concerned about that...perhaps the females that are taking care of the litters are more dominant than the female in question. :shrugs:

Than k you for all your replys. I checked on the nest yestedrday morning when i fed them and etc and foudn 4 babies eaten. She is about 3 months old. No sign of hunch back but she seems to have a lot of diarera. She finally went back to the nest last nite. Her babies are now days old today and she not showing even a lil. She was my best breeder to. She had 15 babies for her last batch. And 2 of them was brown. Very cute. But thems the breaks. Was only gonna kept them for another month or so anyways. Will have A LOT of babies in the freezer by then. But I was gonna find a home for them. Dont' need adults yet so didnt wanna waste the poor things. Already got a home for 1` when I am ready. Tks again for all the help. Really appreciateit.
