The motley allele and the stripe allele share the same locus on the chromosome. Motley is dominant to stripe. A snake can be motley stripe or motley motley and still appear the same. Or can show some of both, sometimes called a Q-tip. A true stripe would have to have two stripe alleles at the motley locus in order to be a true stripe with two broad stripes dorsally and two pin stripes laterally.

The motley locus is on the snake’s chromosome; it is part of his DNA. It is sub microscopic and can’t be seen. Very small.
