Is this a good enclosure??

I have my girl in a large critter tote right now but it's not sturdy enough. My cats have decided that she's the most interesting thing to watch in the world and I keep finding them sitting ON TOP of her cage. Right now it's just not strong enough and I'm afraid they'll knock it over and she'll escape.

I really like this terrarium and was wondering if it'd be good for her? She's very small, only a baby. It's 16"L x 16"W x 12"H. I think she'll be okay in it for a long time but style wise, is it good for corns? I know flatter ones are better than tall...

I have an adult female ratsnake in a cage like the one in your first post. She is fine, and rarely goes near the screen top. However, young corns tend to more active than 10-year-old snakes, so yours may very well hurt herself rubbing on the screen. It's also more difficult to keep heat and humidity in cages with screen tops.

I don't know your room temps and humidity, so don't know if that cage is a good choice for your situation. My snake room is climate controlled, so screen tops aren't really an issue for me. Also, be very careful opening sliding glass doors if your snake is small enough to fit in the glass track. You could severely injure, or kill her if you slide the glass door over her.

A Sterilite or Tupperware plastic tote would be safe for her, but the obvious disadvantage is that there is no viewing area.

Sorry I've muddied the waters a bit! Your snake might do just fine with a screen top, or she may be one of those snakes that will relentlessly rub tying to get out, and injure herself.

Look around here at all the different set ups people have. The second one you linked to would be fine. But lots of people keep very contented snakes in plastic bins. It partly depends on weather you just want a habitat that works well for you and your snake, or you also want the habitat to be decorative to look at.

Plastic tubs are nice if you have several snakes. Aquariums are nice if you only have a few. A 20 gallon long is a popular choice.

I have her in a plastic container now but it's not sturdy enough with my cats climbing on it and I also want to see her. That's why I want a nice terrarium. I have many aquariums but my pet store doesn't carry the locking lids and they're expensive anyway.

I'd use an aquarium and buy the appropriate sized Zilla lid for it. Your corn won't be big enough to lift the lid for several months, or you can put a heavy book on it if you're worried. You can also add Velcro locks to it. This is what I use for 2 of my snakes and I haven't had any escapes.

More importantly, if your cats sit on the screen, they WILL eventually break it unless it's the rigid metal that Zilla uses. My cats broke through the screen on my exoterra and I had to buy a Zilla lid to place over top for reinforcement.

I have all of my corns in an aquarium (of appropriate size) with a screen lid like Rigby suggested and I made homemade tank straps to keep the lid secure.

I should mention I make 2 per tank...one for each end, and I have them on all of my tanks except my rubber boa and my western hognose...even my BP can't push the lid off with these on :)

I'm in Canada and we don't have Joanne's. We have Michaels but the one I work at doesn't sell these straps. I may have to order some.

Well shoot! That would be convenient to have them where you work huh? If I remember correctly they are not horribly expensive, hope you can find some :)
