Is this typical of both males and females??

Cornflake1

The Crazy Snake Lady! :-)
Hi there!
I've been meaning to ask about this for a while.
I had my oldest corn sexed as a female, twice actually and I was ready to breed her this year.
When I put my males in with her, they freaked out and were wizzing around the viv like lightning!! and the 'female' was doing the jerking movements and the chasing.
So what i'm asking is,
Is it just the males that do the chasing and the jerky movements or both?
Is there chance that my female is actually male?
Oh and another thing. When I first put the male in, the 'female' lifted up her tail, exposing her vent and either side of the vent two yellow/gooey spots appeared??
Thanks in advance for any replies! :wavey:

I mostly see the male doing the herky, jerky movements and the chasing, but just going by your last sentence, it sounds like you have a male there!

My males when first introduced to a female often lift the tail and eject sperm plugs, before actually copulating with the female, they have even done this while I hold them, if they can scent female on me! *yuk* So it might be worth you getting them sexed again.

Hope that helps some :)

Oh thats interesting, sperm plugs!! hmmm (i've also posted this in the breeding forum) and I think the only way really would be to put a known female in with her/him and see what the response is there. The only proven female I have is in shed so I will have to wait and put them together after she's done with all of that! Thanks Susielea :)

I did notice in your other thread (didn't realise you had two going at the same time) that the yellow/gooey spots actually retracted back into the cloaca???

Sperm plugs are actually ejected and left behind on the substrate or whatever they can wipe them on, so maybe not sperm plugs :shrugs:

Best thing I think, apart from getting them sexed again, is to try the "putting with a known female", but it may be too late in the season to get a good enough response now, so you may find you'll have to wait till next year.

Good luck :)

I will definately try putting it with the known female whether it be this year or next. I had him/her probed twice. Once when she was about 1yr old then the second time was last year aged 5 by two different professionals, both with female as the outcome??
So if it wasn't sperm plugs (as they wern't ejected and left behind),do you know what else could it have been?
Thanks everso and I'll keep you posted on any outcome! :)

The other day I put my known female in with my poss female corn. As i had her sexed twice as a female the males i put in with her didn't want to know and they were both whizzing around the tank with the poss female doing alot of jerking. Anyway when put with the known female, the movements were very slow, the poss female was showing interest and following the known female around. It then mounted the known female, lifting his/her tail, whilst all the time making sure he/she was fully on top.
This is a very different result from before so I am going to assume that this snake is actually male, would you all agree?
Thanks guys!

If you REALLY wanted to know now you could take her to your nearest specialist vet... sometimes the "pros" at the local pet store may not know for sure...

Yes I did that and even he said female, he was a little hesitant but in the end said female. But after seeing her with a known female i'm pretty sure i've got a male now. lol :)

Hmmm... that's strange... maybe she's just a little on the masculine side! Hahahaha :p Well.... either way... I guess you have a breeder!
