Well i decided about a month ago to try my hand at Rat breeding. After reading all these posts...i decided...for me, it would be best to go with 1.2 rats. I was out of town and ran by a pet store on my way home....the Rats there were 7 bucks each...told the guy i wanted a Male and two females...he threw em in the box and i headed for home....i set em up in a 55 gallon when i got home. As i began looking a bit closer at them...i noticed something...or i should say I Didn't notice something....none off my shiny new rats had hangers (if ya know what i mean)......the !@#$%^& Pet store gypped me out of a stud.
So off i go to my local dump of a pet store....where i ask for the horniest boy rat they had....they pulled out this big lazy lookin fella...he looked whooped....then..., not to be screwed again... i took a gander at his hind end...now i know why he looked whooped (i would be too if i had to drag those around). Best of all he was only a meager 3 bucks....now i really felt like taking a two hour drive to nuke the first pet store.
Anyway...once my blood pressure was back firmly under control...i brought Ole Jed home to meet the rest of the Hillbilly's....next thing ya know ole Jed was on Mrs. Drysdale like a duck on a June bug....over the next week or so....he turned his amorous attentions on Granny and Ellie-May.
Mrs Drysdale just had her first litter of 9 pups:cheers: and i expect the other girls to follow her lead pretty soon....so its a hap hap happy day :crazy02: .

I know this was a long story but i didn't even get into my adventures of trying to breed 3 female mice :bang:

The first pet store could have given you a younger male..
sometimes it takes awhile for their balls to drop. Guess that's not what you want production wise though, eh
still.. just because one of the 3 didn't have visible balls yet doesn't mean he wasn't a boy

It did...on the other hand....have nipples....which i am pretty sure makes her a her. :)

Unless it is a VERY young rat, their ummm "hangers" are very visable!! I have 2 years experience with rats, which may not be very long compared to others around here..but by the time they are about 2-3 weeks old, I have NO doubts who is male/female!!
