My Chilean Rose Hair... I'm so happy... She/He is lovely... so calm and docile. Cute, too, in a way.

The set-up isn't the best at the moment. It's in a kritter keeper atm. I'll upgrade when I'm done moving and when everything settles down. He/She is in a closet too... neighbors can't know I have these kinds of pets. Especially because they have a littlun' .

It's looks big but it isn't really... I *think* they get a bit bigger than this.
And yeah, I don't want to be bitten either. I'm being very careful.

Maybe it looks big because it spans your entire hand! In my book that's a big arachnid, no matter how small your hand may be. They're nice looking animals, I guess they are a bit fragile but they look very strong.

I used to have T's too and Rose Hairs are about the "tamest" spider out there... I guess a more proper word would be "docile".

HOWEVER, every once in a while you'll get a "psycho" rose-hair that you wouldn't want to trust EVER!

Great buy! Congrats on the new eight-legged friend!

wow! Cool!

I got to hold Jay's (pjcreptiles) rosehair. They're incredable but I dont know if I could ever actually own one. I love the idea but....

Aw she's sooo cute! I have the perfect tank for a tarantula and I was seriously considering getting a rosehair but my roommates found out and every single one of them swore to kick me out if I did. (they can't even take the little pumpkin spiders we get up here.) Congrats!

Thanks Elle.

I have a question though (particularly to you Elle or others who know a lot about spiders):
How do you actually tell the sex of a spider? I asked on another forum but I was... confused... a bit.
Can you tell just by the size of it?
Also, should I wait a week before feeding it just like with snakes? It is due to feed tomorrow but I don't know if I should in case it is stressed.

With most spidie species, the females are far more robust and chunky. Males have spindly LONG legs, (mature males have bulbus palps and claws on their front legs). The also tend to have a much thinner appearance.

She looks rather stout, with a big fat bum and shot legs. No claws that I can see either. But the only way to truley tell is to check her next moult. I'm sure it's a female though...

I would feed her whenever you feel like it. She should eat no bother...

Heres a shot I took of a male auratum moult. Theres no wee flappy bit in the middle of the book lungs to indicate female. (I know I know, I'm not very scientific LOL)

And heres my late male rosea, as you can see he is far more colourful (which is another common trait) and has a much larger legspan.

And this is what males do when they mature, they spin sperm webs over themselves to transfer the spern into their palps.
