Ive read the warnings on escapees

Apperently I did not read them enough.... or take into account that my baby is a smart little bugger. Streamer was safe in his enclosure last night. Now I am either really lucky, or Streamer was over excited when he made his escape and didnt realize that getting out was only phase one of the plan and the second part was to not get caught....I wake up this morning and on my way to the restroom moving along the side of the wall and at a very fast speed was my little convict. I keep walking, after all I just woke up (4 hours of sleep) and theres no way Streamer could be out, after all I did my research and his enclosure is secure... then it hits me and I turn around just as he is getting under the pile of laundry I should have washed yesterday..... one by one I move the clothing, and funny enough I found him in the last place I looked (granted I stopped looking once I found him lol) and THAT my fellow corn snake friends is how I learned that my Corn Snake is smarter then me...

So finally, I have something I can advise newbies like me about..... drum roll pleaseeeee

1. When you think you have a secure enclosure, assume you are wrong Corn snakes somehow can teleport themselves out of a tank.

Thanks for reading.

The lid was bigger then the cage, the only thing I can think of, is I put the lid not on evenly, he climber his branch, to his hot side hide climbed the wall got on the edge and followed it until he found a opening.... other then that my only idea is he teleported like on the old school star treks.

I always knew there was something funny about them!

Glad you found your snake so fast! There comes a point though where you have to convince yourself the enclosure IS escape-proof, if we didn't we'd be insane by now! When I first had snakes I was very jittery about escapees, but I'm somewhat more relaxed now. I consider it impossible for my snakes to leave their enclosures (and what's the betting I get home tonight to a coupla empty tanks? :grin01: )

lol you better start knocking on wood. I am a bit freak and wanting to duct tape the lid on until I can find the ultimate escape proof house for him. See Streamer messed up and got caught, he wont make that mistake again. Hes cunning and way to smart for his own good.

This is just a personal opinion of course but I have always considered top-lidded tanks less secure than front-opening vivariums. When I used top-opening tanks I was so worried all the time; once I got my boys in to sliding-door vivariums, I was much more relaxed. Although I'm still an escape-freak if I'm honest with myself, since I have whacking great metal locks on the glass doors :grin01:

Just purchased two side door vivs (will be hard to stop saying enclosure, zoo has me trained). It was a great lesson with nothing but a money strain and no lost or hurt friend so I am extremely lucky... I love his story though esp since its a great ending... Its much more fun to tell this one then the ones I get to tell on how i screw my kid up lol, at least Streamer wont need hours of thearpy

(satire for those who dont know my odd sense of humor yet, if my kid needs thearpy its not going to be to costly, I estimate 10 hours)

I had a couple escapes out of my exoterra 10gal when I first got spur, I found out that the little slider that covers the wire holes was a bit loose and wouldn't always cover the hole fully, so now a piece of tape has solved the escape problem. I had to put him back for the 3rd time and sit there and watch him to see where he went when he tried to escape. took him all of 2 minutes to head back for the hole. lol. Best of luck sealing the new viv against escapes.

lol, well good thing you invested in the new tanks i reckon. After a corn has escaped once if you dont fix your viv, he/she will find the same exit again much sooner, a repeat offending convict!
My snake excaped when i first got it too, nearly had a breakdown, tore my room to little peices and found the little beast under my bed, freezing cold, and very very angry hehe, but overall no worse off for his experience, i coulda stood on him in the night or anything though! As far as i could tell he'd managed (only being 12 inches long) to climb, without anything to pivote off, up a sheer 24 inch high glass tank, who knows!!!

Good to here about a happy ending!

HEHEHEE on the repeat offender thing.... this house we dont have a three strikes your out rule but I did put my foot down and gave him a stern look and proceeded with a lecture. I think he took it well and knows I mean business, he didnt bite me or anything.... :grin01:

Ive found the screen tops work well enough as long as they are the metal and wire ones and not the crappy plastic ones, and as long as you have tight fitting screen clips. I had one escape uinder a plastic Zoo-Med screen top that wasn't fastened down all the way, with no screen clips. Luckily before I even knew she was out I woke up in bed with my young snake on my head.

I prefer using Critter Cages by all-glass. They lock in pretty tight and the click to let you know its tight. But that never stopped me from not closing it all the way and allowing one of my Ball Pythons to escape. the only luck on that is he is pretty much near adult size and can not get out of the room he is kept in. So, he was found in a box of stuff I kept in the closet. I found him about 10 minutes after starting. My girlfriend who was an angry wreck cause she spent the past hour looking for him. Was glad i found him but still upset cause she had already looked in that box I found him in. I told her she was lucky I didnt slip him back into his cage and then say, "what your fussing about, he is underneath his hide." ;)

Funny ha ha right? Hmmmm I might save the "So I took my snake to sears for professional pictures...." story for another time.

And here we have another chance to show my baby off .... watch out, he looks innocent... but remember he is a escape artist and is NOT to be trusted

Streamer aka Capt Kurt

I've not had an escape in the years I've kept snakes and then I have two escape the same day. Nothing like having the snake crawl out of the closet while you're feeding one. Hmmmm, snake in my house....wow! Cool.....WAIT!!!! That one looks familiar!!! The baby got out of the room and into the guest room. Husband found him for me 2 days later. The big male managed to escape his viv twice! I found him after an extensive search the same day. Luckily, he's too big to get out of the snake room as I keep the door shut at all times. Too hard to stuff 560 grams under a door evidently....His front opening cage is now completely taped around every edge. Pain in the butt to open now, but he's got two ladies waiting to breed with him in the spring and the whole project would be shut down without him! He's in Fort Knox now!

I like those Critter Cages with the sliding lids, too. Love that reassuring click. But you're right, I have left the top open when adding crickets to my Glass Lizard- luckily, he stayed underground. I have one snake that is in a tank with a homemade wooden/screen top, which I totally don't trust, so he has two big Gatorade bottles holding it down.

The only escape I had so far was when Maizey got out of her feeding container. I was frustrated by her not eating and she was going in for a second try, and I didn't secure the lid in one corner. Found her within five minutes of discovering she was missing, in a very horrifying place- the disconnected dryer vent, which leads directly outside. When I grabbed her out, she's like, "What???"

i was watching my snake in his tank one day and he climbed up the glue that holds the glass together in the corner of the terrarium! :crazy02: idk maybe yours did something like that

i thought my snake ha gotten out yesterday i was gonna take him out to feed him and he was no where to be found i got my husband i was was cleaning up a strom just to find him i looked everywhere i shifted is bedding i searched every nook and creavce i could think of finnally i put his cage back together and put a pinky in is cage i was really upset cause i own three cats and thought the worse but it turned out one of his hiding places can with a secret compartment i saw his little head poking out i wAS so releaved the hidden spot was really for fish so its wasn't i deal for snakes so i stuffed the hole with cotton balls and sealed it up

the sad part is when i tore his cage about i left that hidding spot out in the open where he really could have gotten out

oh by the way i have a cage where the lid slids into the tracks and can be locked do you think it would be safe enough?

I have a reptile top lid tank. The lid slides on in a track and latches. It also has a hasp for a lock or in my case a snap ring. So far no escapes knock on wood.
