"Just a Normal" Benji's Progression

In January of this year (2012) just a few days after New Years, I had a new terrarium all set up and had saved money for my very first reptile; a Corn Snake.
I did my research and got to know how to care for them, feed them, house them, etc. I had wanted a snake for a while, but this was the first time I had taken action towards actually owning one.
For whatever reason, the Pet Stores near me were devoid of corn snakes, and I was about to give up when a friend texted me about a "brown baby corn snake" in another store just a 15 minute drive away.
Lo and behold, there he was, a tiny little brown and orange noodle. At first I was puzzled as to why he was priced lower than other snakes I'd seen, costing only &65 . The lady at the store said she'd never even seen a corn snake with his coloring before.
We stuck him in a small box (the air holes through which he nearly escaped) and brought him home.

After hiding in his cave almost immediately for 20 minutes or so, he came out and started cruising around his new home.

I even managed to snap this adorable gem:

Sadly I don't have any pictures of me holding him as a baby, but I did handle him regularly.

Awww he's so cute!
That last picture with him looking up at you is just so cute, like he's waiting to be petted.
Nothing wrong with a normal looking corn snake!

Thank you! :D He was just resting his head on it and sat there for maybe 5 more minutes before deciding doing something else would be more engaging.

After some time I was handling him with ease and confidence, I was always so scared I would hurt him and would kind of not know what to do when he moves around my hands. Soon he became a rather big boy, and he moved into a bigger viv! He broke it in by first burrowing all over the place.

After a short while I feel like we gained some trust in each other… especially after, on multiple occasions, he nestled into my sleeve or a crease in my shirt. I know, it's probably just him trying to be warm, but it feels special to me!

He's really getting big now, at almost a year old he's over 2 feet long. He would always stretch down my arm like this while I held him. If he saw a camera, he's stretch towards it and try to climb over.

Here he is with his latest shed, and a closeup of his shiny little face on that same day.

Not to argue or give you a hard time, but he does not look like any kind of a "just a" to me! He is beautiful!!

Oh I know, I put it in quotations as a sort of mockery. :p I had someone tell me he was "Just a Normal corn snake." around when I got him.
I can't wait until his orange takes over! :D

He's "just" adorable!
Honestly, it doesn't matter the paintjob if the pet is full of love, at least that's what I always thought. Pretty is nice, but so is fun!

Sadly I think 'normals' are very under-rated, and often as beautiful if not more so than any fancy paint job.

Looks like you both are having a great time!!

I have to agree, normals are just beautiful to me, the black and white checkers and all the warm oranges and reds. Just beautiful animals.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Love this particular snakes black spotty eyelash markings. So cute.
