Just got my ASF's and have a couple questions!

So a kind gentleman sold me 2.5 ASF's yesterday afternoon as he was passing through Albuquerque.

Just have a couple questions...

I'm going to the feed store today to order lab blocks to feed them and the mice because I realized what I have been paying to feed the little bastards at the grocery store is absolutely insane. In the mean time, will the ASF's be fine on the small mammal mix that I have the mice on or should I get some dog chow until the lab blocks come in?

On a similar vein, I have read about giving them fresh veggies on occasion. Is there anything to avoid like spinach (oxalic acid) or poor ca:phos ratio veggies?

Also, the kind gentleman said that I might have to separate the males but they might be okay because they were raised together. He said something to the effect that "ASF's fight differently than mice" but wouldn't really elaborate... my mice have done some really gruesome things but any idea to what he may have been referring to?

you should be fine to house the males together as long as there are NO females in the same cage, they will fight to the death over women lol as far as food goes ive never tried to give them dog food so i can't help you there :)

Well, the dog chow question is moot as the feed store had lab blocks in stock. Apparently the albuquerque zoo buys them so he keeps them in stock. So no waiting! It's not the mazuri brand blocks but the other purina lab diet blocks.

Can't comment on the other questions, but, as far as I know, there's not really any veggies to avoid other than the outright toxic stuff, like avocado and, IIRC, rhubarb.

I try to give my rats and mice fresh veggies on a regular basis, and it usually comes down to whatever I have on hand for the dragon and tortoises. They also get the "waste" left over after feeding the dragons and torts... For example, the extra stem off collard greens and the like, extra mango after treating the dragon, or on that occasion I accidentally grab a spring mix tub containing a lot of spinach. As long as the lab block remains as their primary diet, I don't see any reason you should worry too much about things like calcium:phosphorus ratios.

They also really like pasta.
