Just got my second

Hey, all. I got my first corn snake about 6 months ago, and recently just got my second! The first one we got from a pet store but decided to go with a breeder for our second. The second is a girl (so the breeder told us, I imagine he would know), I'm not completely sure what the first one is since we got him from a pet store... We're pretty sure he's a boy because I read somewhere that if there are 140+ scales on the belly then it was probably a male and our last count was at 167. I was actually wondering if anyone could tell me if this is a reliable method? I know of probing and popping but because I am not a professional I'm uncomfortable doing this to my snakes out of fear of hurting them.

Anyway, these are some pics of the two kids.

This is Tobias, the shop told us he was an amelanistic.
This is when he was a baby.

Oh wow, she is cute! I used the scale counting method with my anery, I counted from the vent down on a shed skin and determined she's a female. She also has an abruptly tapered tail. I too am trusting the breeder did his work right sexing Balthazar, but if he (the snake) turns out to be female it wont wreck my day.

It isn't wise to feed snakes in substrate like that. If they swallow shavings it could be bad for them. Good luck with your collection, I hope you have many fond serpentine moments.

Yes, she is a sweetie too. It's funny, we can already see very distinct personalities in the two. I want to try sexing her by counting her scales and see if it is consistent with what the breeder said and with the method I have read, but she is still far too little for her first shedding.

Thanks for the advice, Dreamsnake! This picture was from his first feeding, and I had that same concern. We removed the substrate since then.

Oh My Gosh, is Aiylee ever CUTE!?!

Did you remove the substrate from the Viv (tank), or just from the place you feed them?

Good deal. One of mine swallowed a tiny piece of aspen that got stuck to the mouse. I tried getting it, but I only made her swallow faster. She pooped it out alright, but I was still worried for her. I now check the mice for cling ons.

Same thing happened to me, I fed the others out of their tanks but not this little guy for some reason. Anywhoo he eats out of his home now.
