Just gotta say...

Me too...

I went from being absolutely terrified of snakes to falling in love.

I ended up taking in a snake at the last minute that needed a home. I never thought in a million years I would ever have a pet snake. But I took him in and that was it.. love all the way.

A few months later, I got another corn snake. Now I'm getting two more.

Easier said than done, Karen... ;)

I never thought I'd look at a reptile affectionately... Then I got my first snake. I love the crap out of her... And every other reptile I own, have/will own(ed), and/or even just come across in daily life. Which makes my new job at the local pet store a very, very dangerous occupation, especially since they carry some of my favorite species... lol!

I know I'm weird as hell, but I think their little chins and the little small openings in their mouths where their tongue comes out, is so cute.

Floof I couldn't work in a pet store... i would be known as the pet lady.. i would be buying up all of them, especially any corn snakes as I couldn't stand knowing they would probably be thrown in with other or another snake and I know how stressful that could be.. and then I would worry if he/she might get sick..

I'm a big softie.. I know

I researched corn snakes for two years before deciding to actually get one. I went to the breeders to "look" at two babies and left with three. LOL Now my collection has grown to 8 babies and soon will be adding a gargoyle gecko. I would have never believed I would own snakes or a lizard if you would have told me 5 years ago that I would but I love them, even my absolute hateling.

It looks like they're constantly surprised or kissing.

From the moment I stumbled onto a clutch of hatchlings while hunting for Easter eggs, if I could, I had a snake on me. Just took me so long to be able to get one as a pet. Now I have three, with plans on many more in the upcoming years.

... I love my corn snake!!!

I love your corn snake, too. Why haven't you sent it to me, yet? *grins*

I love ALL of my snakes, actually, and corns are some of the best of them all, imho. Not often that beauty, a good personality, and ease of care/maintenance come together in one package like it does with these guys :).

I have to agree, Mrs. Z! Except for the part about me sending you my Glory - she is rather part of our family.

But although I am a new snake owner, I have owned many pets, and she is definitely so beautiful, interesting, friendly, interactive and yet not overly complex to care for. This is a great pet.

I LOVE my snakes, all of them!
I look forward to feeding and cleaning them, and it makes me happy to care for them. Every time I go in there one or another of my sweet babies ends up dazzling my eyes and warming my heart.
Yesterday it was my avalanche Solace. I had hatched an avalanche in 2006 and named her Shiznit. She never ate and had to be euthanized. It took me 3 years to hatch another one....and she is everything a keeper could ever want. The perfect avalanche! She is so bright, with her pinks and whites and yellows..and so sweet. I love the way she eats everytime I offer her food, and those 2 pink dots right on the top of her head. She knocks my socks off!

I love them all, and I am sure that another of my darlings will make me feel all warm inside tomorrow, and I can go on and on about each and every one of them.

I know how you feel (about their cute chins/mouths, too!)... Fortunately, in this position, I can attempt to educate customers, and have full license to do so, since this is one of those rare good stores that actually cares about the animals.

You still get idiots and people who just don't care... But there's no getting around that in any context, so all you can do is try to spot them ahead of time. And you still get people bringing in sick animals, sometimes for advice and sometimes just to dump them on the store... But the thing to consider is that it's better you, as the educated party, are the one handling that situation, as opposed to the store down the road that gave them the sick animal and bad advice in the first place.

I'm glad to be working at a pet store as an educated reptile keeper, instead of seeing someone who doesn't know squat get hired in my place and end up responsible for dozens of people not caring for their animals right. Besides, you can't beat working with animals all day! :D

Come to think of it.. I got so caught up in cleaning bird cages and tending to tortoises today, that I totally forgot to get pinkies for my two new corn snake hatchlings. Oops! Guess it's as good an excuse as any to go coo and goo over the adorable Redfoot tortoise hatchling at the store, lol!

Ugh don't get me started on people abusing animals or neglecting them... it makes me mad as hell thinking about it. LOL

Well, it's good to know that the pet store you work at has someone working there (you) that really cares. And kudos to you for trying to educate others about how to care for the animals.

I love my snakes too!

Ever since I was two I have chased snakes around. My mother tells me a story every once in a while, I was two years old and came into the house crying. My 7 year old cousin follows me and my mother asks why I am crying. He says "He chased a snake down a hole and I wouldn't dig it out for him".

Since I can remember I have always been fascinated by animals of all kinds, but reptiles, snakes in particular, have always held a place close to my heart.

Oh, god, I know! We got some tortoises (the redfoot hatchling I mentioned being one) yesterday from a customer... Three out of the four are in bad shape--two (if not all) with parasites and nasty diarrhea, and the redfoot was all kinds of dehydrated and lethargic--and it's a miracle the fourth is in such good shape (then again, Sulcata are pretty hardy). I was horrified... But there's nothing you can do except be thankful the people are getting out of those animals, and that they ended up in (relatively) good hands.

Actually, most the employees, from what I can tell, care and at least have some knowledge. I'm among the most knowledgeable about the reptiles, from what I can tell so far... But, fortunately, I'm not the only employee that knows a thing or two! :) I only started working yesterday, though, so the only reptile education I've been able to do was utilize new advances in Sulcata tortoise hatchling care that the store owner wasn't aware of (one of the aforementioned group is a Sullie hatchling)... But that works both ways: Not only did the owner learn something new, but everyone who comes in the store and looks at its habitat sees a Sulcata hatchling as it SHOULD be cared for, rather than in the standard "jerky maker" habitat you would normally see in a pet store... And that's always nice. :)

Back a little more on topic: I love my corns! I spent ten minutes grinning like an idiot, afraid to move a muscle, sitting on the floor of my room today, because one of the non-feeder hatchlings I took in last week ATE!!! Woohoo!!! Considering it only took about 20 seconds of gentle handling to be completely smitten with these guys, I am SO thrilled they ate. I would have absolutely hated to see either of them waste away. So, fingers crossed for no regurges and many more successful feedings! :D

I love my corn snake too! I'm not old enough yet to work at a store (14), but now I just take her everywhere and educate anyone I can find!! In the summer she'll go out to the park behind my house to see the little kids. I have pet rats now, and they are great pets, but the allergies and vet bills and attention is too much. Snakes have everything great rolled into one adorable package!!

I never thought i'd love snakes as much as i do now. I thought there were always looking for the chance to bite you. Wrong!! I seriously couldn't ask for a better pet.
