So a katydid hitched a ride on my boyfriends motorcycle a while back. I rarely see these guys around so I took some pics of it. She was missing one of her back legs.

Can you see me now?

I think they can bite...pretty hard from what i hear.

Yes. They can. Personal experience. I always thought they were cool until one bit he!! out of me. Now they're just bugs. (But still pretty cool, I gotta admit. I'm so conflicted...)

I think I have been bitten or stung by every bug in the state of Kentucky at some point. As a kid, I had to catch any bug that I saw.

Cool! Yeah, they can bite hard!! This doesn't have anything to do with that, but when my daughter was about five or so, she was having some sort of crying fit out in the yard and a katydid flew right into her mouth!!! It was so funny. Me and Grandpa rolling on the ground dying of laughter only made her howl louder!!

Same here, I still like them but I watch out when they're on my skin. When one bit me it kind of pulled the skin, I think that's why it hurt. It was quite a surprise when it happened, I really didn't expect it.

myself they make a nice salad.

Really? Do you roast them first? 'Cause I can get them.

What confuses me is how they basically have the same mouth as a grasshopper... and I've held thousands of grasshoppers and never been bitten. So when my brother was screaming about being bitten by a katydid... I HAD to doubt him. LOL.

As I mentioned before, I doubt no longer. LOL.

Me too! I got a pic of this dangerous beast last week. Luckily I was able to handle it without getting mauled.

If you think about it grasshoppers and locusts can do some major plant-chewing so the mechanism is there. Katydids are closer to crickets but I guess they have the same mouth parts.
