Keeping snakes and gerbils???

I'd like a snake, girlfriend would like gerbils! What are the main rules when keeping both of these pets, except making sure the snake doesnt escape!

How far away could a snake smell gerbils?? obviously they would never be handled together, or always the snake first.

Would the snake become distressed? or what if the snake was brought into the same room as them?

Any advice much appreciated

Matt

I had my corn housed in the same room as the gerbil (and rat). No problems. Other people have reported the same. Just make sure you don't handle one before the other, of course :)
