keeping the water fresh while on vacation?

Sandra

corn neophyte
I will be on vacation for 7-10 days at the end of June, and NONE of my friends or family is willing to check on my snake (the big sissies). Is there anything safe I can put in the water to keep it fresh for my little corn while I'm gone?

The only thing I can suggest is you put a few water bowls in the cage, so in case she tips one over, or fowls one, there's always the other one available.

Other than that, (and it's probably obvious) just put the fresh water in the cage minutes before you leave and give fresh water the minute you get back.

And have fun (don't worry) while you are on your trip! One week for a snake really isn't that horrible to go without food/water. I know that I've never been able to watch my snakes all the time, but at times during shed cycles they usually just curl up in a hidebox for a week and I never see them out, even to get water, so if they can do it during a shed cycle, it shouldn't be a problem other times too.

That one of the great things about keeping snakes as pets, you can go on vacation for a week-or even two-and not have to worry about them.:)

Water Issues

I would take a container and place it inside a bigger one, or take a container and put on the lid and make a hole big enough to come and go, tipping won't spill out everything. Do u live near me ?? lol

GSE

I put grapefruit seed extract (GSE) in my snakes water to kill any bacteria, usually about 6-8 drops per gallon. When I go on a trip and am gone for a long time, then I try putting a little bit more in. I've heard of several other people that use GSE and it seems to work just fine.

Good Luck!

I wouldn't do this. I've heard Rich say that these are the type of water bowls that snakes get confused with and once they find their way in, if they can't find their way out there is the potential for drowning. In other words, if Rich has had drownings due to this type of water dish, I wouldn't use it.

Thanks for the info, everyone. Tim - where do you purchase grape seed extract? In a health food store?

I got it at a health food store. I just had the same problem as you did Sandra, but fortunately, my neighbor likes snakes. He changed the water each day. When I came home though, the lids were not secured properly.....thank God neither snake got out!
