Here he is...our 11 year old is holding him (just for size reference)...

Hello.

We have a fantastic little KSB 07 male that is about 9 inches and 20 grams..."Scotchy" (named after Scotch tape by our kids because of their sticky texture).

I have read the males reach about 10-20 inches as adults.
I also read a home 2/3 his length is correct sizing.
That would make 5.5 gallon reptile viv the 'correct' size at 16"long.

I have ALSO read that a 10 gallon is correct or you can use a shoe box sized critter keeper/rack system.

Any input?

he is currently in a rectangular critter keeper 14"longx8"widex6"high, on aspen, UTH on a rheostat, digital thermometer, 105*F basking area to 75*F cool side, small water bowl, flat rock to hide under,
I want him to be healthy but I also want to be realistic with his space needs.

Thanks so much!:D

As babies/youngsters, a 5 gallon tank, &/or a shoebox size tub, is fine.
However, for adult males, I would use a minimum of a 10 gallon tank &/or a 15 Qt. tub.

Thank you...at what age are they full grown...about 18 months?
At what length do you move them?

Have you kept 2 males together?
I have talked to a few people...including breeders that keep duo males in 15-20 gal vivs...

With my luck they would kill each other...just curious.

Size wise you are hitting on the money! 5 gal work well for youngsters, even adult males....some of the larger females can be moved up to 10s later on.

I would dial down that hotspot though 88-90 is all they need there...105 is a bit much.

Sometimes keeping 2 males together work, though I've also had males kill one or the other....at anyrate I usually keep all my snakes seperated (except during breeding season) but just so you know there's the possibilty something could happen.

They reach maturity at about 2-3 yrs. Growth rate, of course, depends on certain factors.

At what length do you move them?

Not sure what anyone else would do but, for sand boas, I would move them, into a bigger enclosure, if they exceed the length of the enclosure.
However, large females may have to live with exceeding the length by a bit.... depending.

Have you kept 2 males together?

I, personally, have never done so and wouldn't do it. While my understanding that cannibalism is rare, there could be other problems associated with keeping two males together.

As an added note ...
I don't know about other breeders but I do know that one friend of mine, who breeds Kenyan Sand Boas (and other Sand Boas), keeps his adults in 32 Qt. tubs (in rack system). Not sure if the males are in 32 Qt. tubs (though they, very well, may be) but I do know that is what his females are in.

Thanks for the help everyone!!!:)

I read they needed a 100-115*F hotspot...I will have to get a new setup.
I bought the stupid ZooMed UTH for 1-5 gallon plastic enclosures...they said it would run at 100*F max...well the one i have runs at 145*F and the rheostat set to the lowest setting only brings it down to 100-105*F.

Ummmm no I don't think so...LOL
Been keeping mine for years at 88-90 no problem....hell I keep youngsters on the shelf with no belly heat at 86-87F and don't have issues...LOL

Great...makes life a lot easier at those temps.

Now I have a $16 dollar critter keeper, $22-UTH from he%!, and a $25- rheostat ...

???Anything I can keep in 14"longx8"widex6" tall criiter keeper at 140*F over one half???(besides a new really expensive way to fry an egg:twohammer)

If I could get the goofy UTH off I could just return the whole setup...but I have a feeling the UTH is going to hold stronger than Gorilla Glue!

At the moment I have mine in a 10 gallon tank. They are young yet :) But I read that when you have then in sterilite type container that you have to be careful of humidity. For the moment I prefer the tank for them because its easier for my son to get them out :)

I have 2 little girls and they are both really nice. Never ever offered to bite, yet :) But then mine are '07s... maybe as tiny hatchlings they are more bittie??

I am actually begining to wonder about my normal... it has little 'dents' on each side of the vent... makes me wonder if she isnt a he?

I've been breeding Ksb morphs for 15 years now. They are easy to care for, stay fairly small and are very hardy.;) Here is a link that will answer most of you questions. http://www.kingsnake.com/sandboa/sandboa.html
BTW mine stay in the Bp room with 3 inch flex watt uth. Xl females are in Iris cb 70s, Adult females are in Rubbermaid 28 Qt. adult males are in 12 Qt. Rubbermaids. All are lidless rack systems run off a Helix dbs 1000. All are kept on aspen shavings.

Thanks so much...
I remember reading that link a while back...too much information since then...
So I printed it out now for reference.

Thanks everyone!!!
