knowing when to let corn go out of viv

weerogue

when would be a good age size to let a corn explore without holding onto her, she is always eager to roam and feel if i let her go onto my couch she will just take off! or get a fright when i go to pick her back up, cause most people i know with corns can just leave them and keep an eye on them, she is 7 month old but still very fast when she wants to be.

any advice wud be great :)

My girl is the most awesome snake ever (not that I'm biased), but I'd never let her roam on the couch. Too many places to quickly get hidden....and I've had some experience with how quickly she can get into tight spaces as my 6 year old put her in my nightstand drawer once. In less than a minute, she was so tangled in the drawer, it took hubby and I about a half hour to free her without harm.
With that said, I don't know at what age we started, but we do put her on the floor and let her explore a bit. But I'm never out of touch reach. A few times, the kids have built little climbing areas out of toys and what have you, and she will hang out there. But for the most part, she will head to a hiding spot. So, it's not really much more than: put snake down in middle of floor, watch and follow snake slither toward couch, grab snake before she goes under couch (or other similar object).
If you think you won't be able to catch yours before it goes under something, don't do it. It's not that exciting any how. ;) If you are sure you can monitor and pick up when necessary, then go for it.
My 2 cents.

what age is she? cause mine is about 2 foot but still really skinny (teenager) lol i suppose she is too small to let go just now, from what youn said about her hiding in wee cracks, ill just have to wait until she is a big girl by hen she should move more slower, im just looking forward to when she can sit round my neck and roam up my sleeves :) i think ill keep a hold of her for a bit longer

My girl is approaching her 2nd birthday and is approximately 3ft long. I've actually found letting her roam around my clothes harder as she's gotten longer, because there's just so much more of her to deal with. ha ha ha! But, she's never been extremely flighty. I've been letting her on the floor for months. I actually restrict her more on my body now than before, because once I'm done handling, if she's all in and out of my clothes, it's a big ordeal to unwind her. :) Just my experience. On the floor, her behaviour hasn't changed much.
Older or not, "tame" or not, they are snakes. In an open area, they are going to head for cover fairly quickly. My girl, again never been real flighty, has never been a problem to "catch," but again I don't really sit back and watch her. I'm right there on top of her! Maybe I worry too much, but I just don't think it's the nature of a snake to hang out and explore....maybe a big boa or ball, but not a corn. They move (generalization). So, they must be monitored.

3 foot thats not bad :) haha because they are so strong it can be hard to unwind them! i think when she turns one year i will start letting her down because she will be thicker by then aswell making her easier to get a grip of lol ye they are always exploring i think corns have more personality than ball python dont get me wrong they are cool snakes but its the child like always on the move that i like about corns. has you girl ever flinched when u touch a certain part of her body? mine does sometimes on the tail half, not the tip i mean 3 quarters down..

Not that I can think of. Having small children (a 6 and 5 year old and I've taken her to my daughter's preschool 2x), she's had to get used to a lot of touching. :) Just today, my son decided he wanted to touch the very tip of her nose. I told him to stop! But she just moved her head away from him. I guess she's learned that while the kids are annoying, they don't hurt her. So, she's like whatever.
My advice is when you do try it. Put down some empty cereal boxes and stuff. Then, she has something safe to explore, and if she does decided to dart for cover quickly, you can get her out easily. :)

Nice one thats a good idea, im going to try it right now! wish me luck :) yeh same with alice she lets me touch her head and lift her head up with my finger under her chin she doesnt seem to mind

:) Good luck! It's been fun chatting with you. I haven't been on here in a few weeks. Nice to talk snakes!
BTW, I spent three days in Scotland way back when I was in college. Beautiful country and the nicest people. My friends and I agreed that you guys have crappy weather otherwise it just wouldn't be fair to the rest of the world. ha ha ha!
Have a great evening, and I hope Alice has a great time exploring.

Another fun "playpen" is to bunch up a throw blanket and let the snake burrow as they please. Stig's about 5ft and very curious, so I let him wind through a blanket for a few minutes to calm him down. Otherwise he's just all over the place!

I also have a hooded zipper sweater that fits tight around my hips, he loves being put in there and pretends to be a belt around my waist. It's pretty funny, occasionally he'll stick his head out of the neck or a sleeve. :)

I was just going to suggest this! Cornsnakes prefer to hide, rather than roam.
I throw a blanket in the middle of the living room, not only do I know mine will stay within the confines of the blanket but I know they aren't overly stressed either because they can explore while being hidden. I'm sure you know, but never ever take your attention off your cornsnake. They can disappear sooo fast!

Oh definitely! He normally likes to poke out of the blanket and climb into my lap (I sit on the floor with him and the blanket) but occasionally he'll just dart off in a random direction.
