is it ok if i use a 60 watt bulb on a 10 gallon ( i can get a heat pad but was wonderin if 60 watt bulb is ok) my house gets like 73% at night i checked it lastnight.....and does it hurt the snake if he dosnt get light ...from like a bulb?...dont they know difference between day and night? and cant that stress em out? :noevil: :puke02:

It all depends on how high the temp gets with a 60 watt bulb. In my opinion, I would think that a 60 watt bulb would get too hot for a 10 gallon. As far as light goes...its fine. The setup I have is I have a ceramic heat emitter at the top of my tank, and I have the tank in front of a window which receives indirect sunlight. This way, I don't have to worry about what to do for heat when it becomes night. Your 60 watt bulb idea would work fine during the day, but what about at night when the snake still needs some source of heat to be active? In my opinion, its better to get either a ceramic heat emitter or a heating pad. And also, I dont know if ur snake is nocturnal or not...if its a corn snake it is. What I did in order to watch him at night was get one of those red lightbulbs they sell at the pet store, the ones for providing heat at night, and just screw it into the ceiling light fixture...this way...when u wanna see him at night, all you do is flip on the light switch.
And yes, it would definitely stress the snake out if the light is kept on all the time. So, check into my idea of getting either a heating pad...or a ceramic heater (which I have) Snakes don't get any benefit from UV like lizards do, so it doesnt make any difference to his health to provide light or not...but of course he has to know when it is DAY and when it is NIGHT...and so leaving the light on all the time would be a really bad idea.

Snakes in the wild don't have night heaters. ;) A temp drop at night is perfectly normal.

Corn snakes like an ideal night temp of between 72 and 80 degrees. I don't know about your house...but during the winter...my house can drop to the mid 60s as far as nighttime temps go. Thats waaay too cold for any corn snake to tolerate. What I have is the SUPERDELUXE herp power thermostat with the night drop feature. This way...the snake still gets some heat at night...just not as much.
