Lighting for my corn...

ZiGGy903

One Snake Wonder
My corn currently has a light on at night.....its kinda purplish-black I dont know what kind it is but its on 8pm-8am and turn his day light on at 8am-8pm....is that correct lighting because his night temp isnt much lower than his day......
and i never see him out i know hes nocturnal but i just wanted to know if he should ever be out during the day. Plz help...:D

They dont need light at all. I dont use any lights for my corns. The only time i might put a light on is if i need the cooler side in the winter to come up in temps a little. Other then that i dont use lights.

I do use lights during the daytime, as my vivs are all in living areas and it makes them look nice :) I don't use uth because I regulate the temps with the lighting. Takes some trying out which light gets the correct temp before I put a snake in the viv. At night I don't use heating. It doesn't get really cold in the house and that way they get a day-night cycle.
But I agree they don't really need lights, as long as the temps are ok. Uth is sufficient (and cheaper than lighting :))

I just use lighting in the winter months during day the to keep the day-length period up (days get quite short in Cape Town compared to summer) and to raise the ambient day-time temperature.

At night I let the ambient air temperature drop and the UTH is on 24 hours.

I use a compact fluorescent bulb for the day and a created a neat little night light out of blue LEDs for night. He might not need it but I like being able to look at him, even though he hides all the time, haha.

Had you thought that he might be hiding all the time, because of the lights? It might be worth switching them off for a few days and seeing what happens. Ironically, you might actually get to see him more often, without.

Be careful using a compact fluorescent bulb on an animal that doesn't have an eye lid, per se. I used one of the Zilla ones, on my Frilled Dragon and it almost killed him. The UV intensity of those bulbs, can do some damage to the retina's of the snake.

Here is a link regarding a study done on them.

What is photo-kerato-conjunctivitis?

When you read it, keep in mind that those animals are lizards and have the ability to close their eyes. Something your snake cannot do. Corns do not need artificial lighting.

The CFL bulb is actually a more recent addition and I haven't seen a change in his behavior. However I definitely will look at the UV side effects of it though. Didn't think of that.

Well.....I sleep in my basement and his viv is down there alsoi tried opening a window but his temp was 65 and i dont want him to freeze ill try turning his light off for awile but if the temp is low in the daytime i switching back! lol

Ah sorry, I misunderstood. If the light is the only heat source, then you'll have to leave it on.

Yes, but there are other, safer methods for heating a snake tank. I think the OP or the others that have posted, should consider getting a UTH and at least a rheostat. JMO! Heat Lamps/lights dry out the air and can get too hot. Also, a CFL Bulb isn't going to emit enough heat, to warm a viv! And if the CFL isn't installed correctly, it could be doing damage to the snakes eyes.

When i got my snake i got his viv and all things in it (exept 1 hide) the setup i got was reccomemded to me by one of the workers, a breeder, and i dont know what kind of lite it is but thats all i can afford at the time, and withiout it he could freeze!! Ohh and i checked his temp in the middle of the night (because they are nocturnal, right??) and it was 70-75 degrees so the lights he has in the now are fine. :)

That's OK for the cool end, but the warm end should be nearer 85-88 degrees.
