I squish them and have poured boiling water on all his tank, hides etc.., but still they come. Where are they coming from???!!!! What do i need to do to get rid of them, but i also don't want to annoy him at them mo while he does his thing with the shedding!!
Any good ideas out there:confused:

Do they look like specks of pepper or are they winged like a small gnat?

If it is pepper-like then they are mites.

Disclaimer: Without seeing them in person I can only speculate that they are mites.

Suffice it to say, if they are in fact mites then you have a task in front of you. Please take the time to educate yourself before taking action. Since this is your first experience with mites, I'd recommend that you give your herp vet a call and ask their opinion on this topic.

Thanks for that CAV

Hi thats great, well its not... hes got mites!! but thanks for your help. I did lots of reading up on the problem last night and will bleach everything a buy him some new hides as these ones are cardboard. You know he was all milky white and I thought he was having his first shed, his eyes too where white, but today hes back to his normal colour and cheerful but no shed skin about anywhere, have had his whole viv out. Can't understand that one!
Thanks again for your help :D

Maria,

snakes usually cloud up (blue eyes) before they shed and once they are ready they should turn back to normal color (maybe a bit duller) and then a few days later you'll see its shed. So in a few days you should see a fresh shed.

As for the mite thing, you can try using reptile relief. It's a great sprey that is used to kill mites. It doesn't harm the snake either and you can use it directly on the snake itself.
So I would really recommand spreying your whole tank and everything with this stuff.....including the snake itself. But make sure you take out the water bowl before you do it...you don't want the snake to drink that stuff...
cleaning with bleach would also be a good idea.

good luck and hope that everything turns out fine for you~

Thanks so much Simon, I was so disappointed when I didn't find a shed so thats what happens ahhhhhhhhhh no I understand! Cool, will keep an eye out for his shed in a few days.
As to the mites, thats great help, will go see if I can get that stuff, we aren't really up on snakes here!
Thanks a million,
Maria:D

on the mite situation, i would recomend moving the snake to a quarantine tank (just paper towels 2 hides and a water bowl) and thoroughly clean the original tank on a daily basis over 1 week period. mites are persitant and can live a few days in diferent stages without food.
