Live plants?

Sunblotch

Sarah
Does anyone know if there are any live plants that are safe or not safe to put in my corn snakes enviornment? Thanks!

aloe vera i believe is safe, as well as some (but not all) yukka plants, but don't quote me as I'm not 100% on eather.

Pothos is perfectly safe as well, but I've found live plants didn't hold up under the constant crawling assault my snakes put them thru. I switched to silk.

Aloe vera, snake plants, ferns, spider plants, Pothos to name a few are all ok for snakes.

we use pothos and ficus with some of our lizards, but I only use fake when I use then with snakes

I've got a number of the plants already mentioned plus some bromelaids in my planted tanks. I find that the aloes and bromelaids stand up best to being crawled over, though I've got some sturdy dragon trees (not sure what the scientific name is) in tanks that smaller snakes like to climb and hang out in. Some things make good background plants, and my snakes seem to have an idea of which things they can climb on. I rarely see them trying to go up the umbrella plants or the Chinese evergreen.

Silk plants

Where do you all get your silk plants? Are they readily available in stores like Petco and Petsmart or are they more difficult to find? Any recommendations for cleaning them before introducing them to the viv?

You can obtain nice silks from Hobby Lobby, JoAnns, other craft stores, and sometimes even WalMart. Hobby Lobby's tend to be pricier than some of the others, but they're usually higher quality and more realistic looking with better colors. WalMart tends to have pretty decent silk ivy and "house plant" looking things. You can rinse them clean in warm water or spray with a mix of detergent and water and then rinse - what we do when we're cleaning old ones to use in new shows. (Costume design...) Some of the pet shops will have silk, but mostly they seem to carry the plastic plants - probably because they're easier to clean and more rigid.
