Many thanks again to everyone involved in getting these little guys to me... Jim for carrying them over the border, Simon for shipping them to me, and of course Rich for chosing my logo in the 1st place. ;) I'm already loving these 2... they're just cool!

Of course, I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to order a couple more babies at the same time (It's a good thing I don't live in the states, I'd be spending -all- my money on snakes!).. and here they are!

I'm jealous.J/K. They are some beautiful lavs you have there. The one looks to have an orangish tint. Maybe it's just me. I love that blizzard too. Man I can't wait til spring when I get some more cash flow. I'll just have to get me some of Rich's stock. I like the cat begging for a mouse pic. Please give the cat a mouse she deserves it after that pic...LOL..LOL..

hey dawn!

well I know where to come in a couple years for a lav! i can just drive over and pick them up. Maybe next time I'm in the city I'll come by for a look!

Okay....now I don't like you anymore.....
the photo quality that you are taking is much much much better than what I took.....I was going to post some of the photos that I took of your butters, lavs and blizzard......but now that I have seen your photos....I don't think that I'll be posting those up....I don't want to embarras myself....darn~~

Love those butters~~~

Nice Rack!

Any info on the construction? What kind of wood, what thickness, etc. It looks like just the thing I need.

Simon, I think you should post your pics anyway... I'd like to see them :)

Drizzt, they're actually both pretty orangish/brown right now - still babies, still have the whole 'mocha' look going on...

Peter, the upright pieces are 3/4" plywood (actually salvaged from an old cupboard that was torn down). The top, bottom, and shelves are 1/4" MDF. There are grooves cut into the plywood that the shelves slide into. Each shelf also has a piece of arborite (s/p?) on it, to make the rubbermaids slide a little easier and fit a little tighter.
Keep in mind, this rack doesn't have a heat gradient - I just keep it in a room that's a pretty constant 80F. a) it's hard to find heat tape up here, and b) each shelf would probably need a seperate strip of tape. (None of my snakes currently have a gradient and are doing great... though I still intend to set all my adults up with one over the christmas break if I can) I may try something with this rack when I get some heat tape anyway to build an adult rack with (that will be a while though).

Thanks!

Now I just need to figure out what MDF is! ;) All mine also are in a room with no heat gradient. The temps are in the mid 80's. There is a gradient, actually, but it is from floor to ceiling.:( It is amazing how much the temps can change in the space of about 16 inches. I know pics aren't always so clear, but your rack seemed like it was finished very nicely. Also, what is the arborite? Is it place, tacked, glued, whatever to the entire surface of each shelf(bottom or top?) ?? How is the weight on that rack? It looks like it would be a good 'modular' design. I need about 6-8 units like that. Thanks again. Sorry for so many questions but I have been on a quest for the perfect rack system that is cheap(inexpensive;) ), easy to build, versatile, light weight yet sturdy, and open for easy modification.

MDF = Medium Density Fiberboard. :) Basically kinda like wood made up out of sawdust pressed together with glue/resin. Unpainted, it kinda looks like cardboard... but it's not expensive and easy to work with... and if you paint it, you can't tell the difference.

The arborite is just glued down (just like it would be on a countertop).

It's actually pretty light (not as light as say, plastic would be... but also not as expensive as plastic either! ;) ). One person can lift it without too much difficulty - just a bit akward for one person to carry around because of the size (i wouldn't want to carry it, say, up the stairs... but across the room wouldn't be a problem) My other hatchling rack is lighter (only 2 rows) and doesn't have full size dividers - heat tape would be easier on it. This one's still heavier than it looks though, as the entire thing is 3/4" plywood.

(only one row with rubbermaids in this pic).

On another note, all the new snakes ate tonight - so I now have 5 pregnant shoelaces sleeping off their meals. :)

Thanks again

I guess the MDF is what I have always refered to as 'pressboard', being that it is made up of bits pressed together. Thanks for the pics. I'll have to add them to my list of ideas. :D

hey Dawn

Oh no, more questions! How is that rack put together? I don't see any screws holding that top MDF on. BTW, I could only find 3/4 inch MDF. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
