Long vs. Tall vivs

Hey all. This is just a generalized question to gets some thoughts/opinions from you guys.

When I worked in a herp house, among our snakes we had four corn snakes. Two were kept in 40ish gallon long tanks, whereas the other two were kept on display in a large, but tall, viv. The two in the tall one seemed to love to climb on the branches and props we put in there, spending little time on the ground.

Do you think it's beneficial to keep snakes in a tall viv where they can have access to branches/vines or would you prefer the longs for more floor space for burrowing?

Disregard money, space, availablitity. Just a question to hear some responses.

Happy herping all!
Amy

Hmmm...

Well, if I'm disregarding money and space, then I would be getting tanks that have lots of floor space as well as good height so that they could have the best of both worlds!

I know I've heard many people say that corns aren't arboreal, but I have yet to have a corn that hasn't enjoyed climbing. I have one that wouldn't even come down from his plants except to cruise at night. Almost all of my corns also burrow. I can't say for sure which they prefer. I always feel it's best to give them both options when possible.

If I had to choose I would go with more floor space. Of all my climbers, only one has spent the majority of his time in the plants. The rest prefer to seek shelter on the ground in their hides or under the aspen. For that reason I would hate for adult snakes to be scrunched up and constrained by limited floor space.

Like Zach said, the best of both worlds would be nice! But, if I had to choose I would go with LONG. Typically, the only time my snake climbs on anything is occasionally at night when he is cruising the tank. Other than that he is in his favorite hide. I vote LONG!!

I keep my oldest and so far largest corn in a 29 gal. he likes to climb but also likes to spend the day sleeping in his hides or burrowing in the substrate. so i gave him both worlds...height as well as length. a 29 gal is as long as a 20 gal long but also has a little bit of height so i could fit strong branches and some vines for him to climb on.
when my rat snake gets bigger, i will probably move him into a 29 or 40 gal. he's definitely a climber, he spends all day in the vines or branches. he only goes into the hides when he's getting ready to shed.
