Join one of the travel groups like Hospitality Exchange at
http://hospex.net/ We were members for a long time, although I think we have lapsed this past year or so. Members pay a small annual fee and get a listing of all other members - many in the US, but many abroad, too. The idea is to stay with people who share some of your interests, for no more than 3 days, unless you really hit it off and they invite you longer. Then you get to see the area like a native, and meet cool people who are gregarious, or they wouldn't be members.
We never stayed with anyone else, but we did have a family from France, a man from Ireland, a woman from Finland who had been living in Colombia several years, plus a few Americans. We even kept in touch for a while, but then lost touch. I have heard of virtually no problems, because any problem members would be reported to the Exchange the first time there were problems. And it is cheap! You could go to Niagara Falls, or maybe Canada, since they are both RELATIVELY close, yet sort of exotic, and stay with a couple of different members. Their profiles will discuss their family life, house, interests, etc, so that you can try to make a match. It is a very different way to travel and to meet people.
There are many similar groups, but that is the one I have experience with. Some attract families, some young singles, etc. Check them all out online and see what meshes with you.
