Dazed and Cornfused
Has anyone ever tried to breed a female that is fully-grown but still on the small side (only 35-38" and less than 300 grams)? I have a beautiful trio of P/G Snows that are all about this size and are at least 3 years old.

I'd love to use them this year if possible, but would be interested to see if anyone else had tried this in the past.

My cutoff for breeding weight is 240g (a number which is mentioned in the CSM). The only thing you need to be careful of is that the snake is well-fed before and after laying...

If I recall correctly (as I don't have the book infront of me), Kathy Love was originally using 200g as her minimum breeding rate, but switched to 240g as it gave her better results per clutch.

I personally know someone who accidentally bred her corn at 176g, and the female and eggs still survived (I would not recommend it to anyone though).

Needless to say, unless your snakes are super-thin, they ought to be safe to breed, especially since they're 3 years old already.

I bred two small 4 year olds last year, no problems, fine healthy snakes, small clutch sizes but all good eggs from both of them, they put on a lot of size after laying actually, and to my relief neither double clutched.

I have a small adult (38") female that laid a clutch of 11 eggs last year and was only 180g, Though I would not recommend it, But she had some good girth on her and came from a gene pool from southern FL that doesnt grow very big.
