Lost baby snake survival time?

Kjay

Helloooooo out there!
Hi...I can't believe this has happened but my little Okeetee from Daytona has escaped! I last fed him 2.5 weeks ago and when I went to check on him a few days later he was gone through a tiny opening I did not see in the top screen cover. I have torn my house apart looking for him every day and have done a lot of the "how to find a lost snake" things. No luck. My question is....how long can a 2 month old hatchling live without food? When do I give up hope of finding him? I can't very well leave dead pinkies out all over the house!

It depends? He can live a couple more weeks to a couple more months. It's all going to depend on whether he can find water. Food is something they can go without for a little while.

I would suggest looking around appliances, tv's or anything that gives off a little bit of warmth. I would bet that he is hiding out in one of these places. You could also put a little flour around corners or along walls and see if there is any movement. Try using tape traps. They are easy to make. Just use masking or the blue painters tape. Do not use duct tape or you could injure or kill the snake. Place this stuff, sticky side up, on the floor along walls, edges or corners. Check them often because if the snake gets to moving and hits one, he could get all tangled up. A little olive oil or water will get it loose.

Also, did you go through the viv good. I thought I lost a snake once. Tore the house a part looking for her. A few hours later, when I was ready to rip hair out, I went back to the viv and went through it again. Mostly, just for S & G's.

I picked up her favorite hidey house, which was an old box, I found her coiled up on the inside top. She managed to hook herself on this little corner and when I picked up the box, she clung. I had no idea.

I pulled everything out of that tank, several times and I was sure she was gone. Fortunately for me, I was mistaken. ;)

Good Luck and keep us posted!

Well, you do live in Florida. Florida is the corns natural environment. I would say he could thrive to a ripe old age if he found the right conditions.

wasnt there a few other lost corns that ended up being found with some growth put on them. i say with your environment you have a good chance of never finding him if he got out, or he has a chance to thrive right in the house if you have unseen pests he can eat such as anoles.

Thanks. He's definitely not in his tank. I did the tape traps last night. I am leaving a bowl of water down. I don't see how he could have gotten outside--the doors have good seals and are always closed, but if he did I'm sure he'll be fine...it's still in the 80's and 90's around here. I just hope he doesn't starve to death holed up somewhere! I get up during the night with my flashlight and search for him but so far nothing.

Well my corn was older...I found her a year later but she was a yearling when I lost her. I did have a hatchling king escape and turn up 2 months later, fatter and healthy. Found him in the laundry room. Never give up hope and go ahead and get a new pet to fill that spot. That is a sure way to find him. *smile*
But if you have dogs or cats...just watch them carefully...they will find the baby before you do.
