Lost snake and cats

IguanaMama

Love at first sight
I'm so miserable, I can't even think straight. My snake escaped three days ago and I can't find him, my home is too big and cluttered. I have two cats. Will they bother the snake? I know they go after birds and rodents, but I thought (hopefully) that they would leave the snake alone as it really doesn't have a scent. Usually, when I lose a rodent, the cat starts sniffing and that's how I find it. But, the cats haven't been sniffing around. I left a few f/t mice around, but the cats ate them, yuck. Tonight I'm going to try putting them in bottles, but I want to know if I need to lock the cats up. Please wish me luck, I'm rock bottom depressed right now. :(

Sorry to hear about your little escapee! I hope you find him. I can't be much help in the cat department, but there have been a few threads about lost snakes and cats that might help. Here's a link to one of them:

Cats and Lost Snakes

Good luck, and I hope you find him soon. Keep us updated.

I would definitely lock up the cats. There is nothing so irresistable to a cat as a wriggling snake. My cat can't keep away when I have mine out. They would definitely be a threat to your lost snake. Good luck finding it.

Yes, lock the cats up. Snakes do have scent. Just because we can't smell them, doesn't mean a cat couldn't. Good luck finding you snake.

i would lock up the cats too, especially at night. corns are nocturnal and he'll probably come out at night to go looking for something to eat. unfortunately, thats when cats go prowling around too.
i actually rescued my garter snake from one of my cats. he was wild caught by one of my orange tabbys. luckily i got to her in time before she accidently killed him. she had no interest in eating him, she just thought he was a cool toy to play with.
my cats are all outdoor cats, they rarely come in except when it's cold at night or raining. and my reptile tanks are in my office and bedroom so i just close those doors so the cats cant get to them. and i also make sure that the lids on the reptile's enclosures are always secure. when i feed them, they are fed in tupperware containers with tightly closing lids.

My cat's are totally afraid of our snakies & usually end up heading the other way.

But I would deffinately restrict those cats, maybe put out a heat mat & a food trap when it's feeding day. I know someone just recently had sucess with a bottle trap :D

I hope you find that little bugger.

actually, you may be able to use the cats to your advantage... I've used my cat to help me find an escape Beardie...

but, unsupervised, they should be locked up

actually that's a good idea. If nothing else you can tell when they are messing around some where they usually wouldn't.

You must have smart kitties, I caught one of mine licking the wall yesterday :eek1:

actually he's pure evil

but, yeah, worked for us when we had the lost beardy
I thought I knew were it was, but after 30 minutes in that corner of the room with a flashlight, i couldn't see a thing. Let the cat out of the bathroom and he started paying particularly close attention to the same place I had been looking. grabbed the cat and gave him to my girlfriend, looked again, and there was the beardy...

Happened to me with my snake Sid Vicious. He was tiny when he got out. Dogs can be a great help  , I tore apart my room looking for the little monster, and Roxie was just sitting and staring at a bag in the closet, turns out Sid was behind it all curled up and waiting for night to come... he escaped again like months later, i looked in my closet, there he was in my lime green converse :crazy02:.

Possibly, cats could do the same :shrugs: ?

Not sure if they smell them but they probably hear them. I was pressed for time and watched the cat while I worked on someone's computer. Cat found him behind some boxes no harm done. Not sure I would trust a cat unsupervised. My place has too many heavy objects the snake could retreat to if the cat got rough. I was more worried about it getting into another apartment or dying somewhere then having the manager make some new pet rules

Found Him!!!!!!

YES THAT'S RIGHT!!!!! You can't even imagine what's been going on since he's been missing! All the tearing up of an overly cluttered apartment, all the false alarms, moved piano that nearly came tumbling down, me in a near suicidal depression. I tried to use the cats as pointers, but they kept pointing out themselves stupid cats. I've been collecting coke litter bottles, filling them with poked and prodded mice.... etc.

:dancer: :dancer:

The good news is I found my snake. More good news is that I found him fat and happy. The bad news is that it's my son's pet mouse Cinnamin that has made him fat and happy. Yes, that's right, I found him curled up in the mouse habitat all fat and happy. I've been checking there every morning because, hey, if I were an escaped snake, that's where I'd head. I feel really bad about losing Cinnamon, but she was nearing the end of her lifespan, where as Brickface is just beginning his-- he's August 04, not yet a year and a half old.
I'm so relieved. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT and SUGGESTIONS. I AM VERY GRATEFULL AND I WILL NEVER LET THIS SNAKE OUT OF MY SIGHT AGAIN! I just hope he's ok now, but I will be posting that question in the health section.
