Managing multiple glass tanks?

As my collection is starting to grow larger and larger (but not really large enough to justify spending big $$$ on a rack system) I'm having more and more difficulties dealing with the weight and size of all of my various glass tanks/aquariums.

I definitely can see myself saving up for some racks and/or stackable front access caging in the future, but for now I am just going to continue using my glass tanks.

I'm currently dealing with 2 20-gallon longs, 2 10-gallons, a 35-gallon, a 30 gallon tall, and a large Vision Cage that takes up 36" x 28" floor space, and is a foot and a half tall.

My most current plan is to get rid a lot of the furniture in my bedroom (book case, dresser, small desk) and instead buy some heavy duty extra sturdy shelving that I can use to "stack" all of my tanks on while still being able to get in through the top lids. I don't even care if I have to use a step ladder to get to the highest cages, as long as I can get them all off of my floor. Most of my cages now are either on top of furniture like dressers and nightstands, meaning I have no clear surfaces left in my bedroom, or resting on pieces of plywood on my floor. It works alright and it relatively tidy, but since I will soon be moving my gecko and skink back into my bedroom, AND adding a new rosy boa, I need to get something figured out.

If anyone has figured out good ways to manage a large volume of heavy glass tanks/aquariums in a single room that would be amazing! I have a few months to gather supplies and get rid of furniture, and would prefer to spend a minimal amount of cash on this project.

You can buy stands for aquariums, I have a stand that holds 2 55 gallons, one on the top and one underneath, you can fit smaller aquariums on it as well.

You can get them for cheaps on Craigslist.

Don't know if this is what you have in mind but we use wire racks for our glass cages, you can get the smaller sized ones that work well for 20L and might handle a 30 decently, at Costco for $36 each and the big ones that our 40s are on are, I think, around $69 or so at Costco. Lowe's also sells similar racks but they cost a bit more and the smaller ones are a bit less heavily built and don't work quite as well for heavy tanks.

Here is a thread with our reptile room and the racks I'm talking about.

Oh wow that's great thanks!

Those racks are GREAT!
I have one for my Crested Geckos, and I have one in my snake room, until I get more AP cages, then the second one will eventually end up in my living room as a second rack for gecko tanks.

I have a coffee table that works perfectly for a 40 breeder, that has room for two of those plastic drawer things on a shelf beneath it. I've used them for super worms, feeding bins for amphibians and for storing shipping supplies. I got it at Target.

Like Nanci said, you can get creative! Look at places like Target or Walmart or, even better and cheaper, thrift stores. You are sure to find something that works.

Besides my 55 gallon stand, I have a long, thin table with a shelf under it longways that I use, the top holds two 20L aquariums.

I use a metal shelving unit that I got at Walmart. It wasn't very expensive and it's quite sturdy. And you can arrange the shelves however you want, so you can leave yourself enough space to reach into the tanks.

I would actually like to get another one of those because it only fits half my tanks. My others, like you, are on dressers and bookshelves and the floor.

I have one of those black storage stands from Canadian Tire, 5 shelves. I am only using it to store my glass tanks, but the issue I have is it's not adjustable, so it's very tight/difficult to get my hand in between the next shelf up and the tank lid. Not ideal.

Definitely spend the extra money and go adjustable! They are otherwise very sturdy :)

That is so true. I dreaded getting racks. After the first day with the first one- I love them. SUCH a difference.

This is exactly what I need! Do you have a photo or a link? Pretty please?
