Massachusetts-- Found a wild snake, help with identification?

Unfortunately, I ran over this little guy in my car. He had a mostly black back, and the slight patterning didn't come through in the photographs, so I thought that the underbelly might be a better way of identifying it. This was found in North Andover, Massachusetts. If you'd like the back pics, I'll be happy to post them. I just want to know what it is!

My thought was a Northern Watersnake... I've never seen the underbelly, but I was told that they look nearly black when dry, and he looks a fair bit like the photos I've found of them. Just thought I'd check here anyway.
