Chello, my name is Alexandra, but you can call me Alex if you want. I certainly became a proud parent of a Colombian red tail boa. Obviously not a corn snake, but there seem to be a lot of things that apply to snakes in general, and I've been looking for an awesome online community where I can learn more. This seems like the perfect place; it's a friendly atmosphere here. (I've been to redtailboa.net, they are kind of snarky)
Sophie is a 3 ft long, big ball of mush. She is great when handled, and loves to rest her head over your heart. I guess she likes the feeling of our heartbeats. She is still adjusting to her new tank so we haven't handled her since the evening we brought her home. She finished her shed sometime last night, and right now she is just curled up and relaxing. Question, we got her on Monday evening, and her demeanor has gotten a bit better. I have heard that snakes become more interested in food after shedding. Would it be all right to try a feed tomorrow, or wait a little bit longer? It's been nine days since she ate at the pet store.
Sophie is not my first reptile, I got a pair of red eared slider hatchlings in September of 2008, my mother named one Hurricane, and I named the other Typhoon. Back then they were barely over an inch long, and now they are almost 6 1/2 inches long. For some bizarre reason they are cool with sharing a tank together, I don't know if it's because they are both female or if it's because Typhoon is actually a hybrid, or a combo of the two. I've always gotten the impression that Hurricane doesn't care either way, but I think Typhoon would have an anxiety attack if I put her in a tank alone, permanently. (She's half map turtle, they seem to crave attention more than other aquatic species).
We also have Sadie, who we got last year in July or August. Sadie is 8 inches long, and almost full grown. She is very mellow, totally cool with being picked up and held. Loves to sit on my mother's lap. Our Egyptian Mau mix, Spike, follows her around when we let her wander the apartment during her tank cleanings. Sadie has no issue with this at all. If we pick her up and take her away from Spike, he we will follow us wherever we take her, and howls relentlessly until we give her back.
That leads into Spike... he's a permanent kitten. His biggest enjoyments are attacking me, chasing me around the house, and randomly running from room to room just for the sake of running from room to room. His best buddy is Jenny, our 10 year old orange tabby, who even at her age likes to wrestle with him. I have had Jenny since I was 13, she is almost 11. I am Jenny's mom. She has always liked me, and it took her most of her life to like my mother. Jenny also has warmed up to my boyfriend, and I think this has everything to do with the fact that she sees us cuddling all the time and considers him cool. That or, she is royally jealous of him.
And now for the pictures!!!
I spent several months getting to know her before bringing her home. That's the only reason why she was allowed that close to my face:
Spike and Sadie: (She is NOT afraid of him. She chased him around the living room the first time they met).

We took photos of Sophie and her shed this morning, but haven't uploaded them to my mother's laptop yet. We will, soon
