Mice/Rat breeding ????

Hi, I was wondering why my mice and rats werent breeding... I have 2 colonies of mice and 1 colony of rats... I was wondering why nothing is happening. I have had them now(brought in a fresh colony) for 1 month (mice) and the rats for 3 months or more... I have only gotten 1 litter out of the rats since I bought them.... ???? They are fed and watered everyday and are well taken care of.... Whats the problem????? :shrugs: :shrugs: Any advice is appriciated Thank you.

What do you feed them? do they have a constant supply of food or do you just give a little each day? You say watered each day, do they have a water bottle?

How much space do they have? Is it just 1 male per colony? Do they have nesting boxes of some kind?

I have tried feeding them special rodent food and had no success... someone else had suggested to feed them dog food, so Im trying that now... I give them a little bit of food everyday, they have a lot of space and yes, they have a water bottle.... 1 male per colony, w a nesting box in the mouse cages.....

well they should have food available at all times. Not sure if thats the problem but it could be. If you are feeding dog food you should supplement it with grains and occasional fresh vegetables.

If you've two colonies of mice try swopping the male mice over. Often-say 10% of the time I have this problem when males mature with the females and they just don't get the idea to start shagging them. Introducing them to new females gets em all fired up and producing. Also mice can stop breeding if its too cold (and also apparently a lack of a day/night cycle but I've never found that to be a problem.)

Id give the mice more time where they are at now. 1 month is nothing. It usually takes about 6-8 weeks for them to start producing with a new colony. Moving males might just end up getting them killed.
