Mice VS Rats?

I was just wondering if it is a good idea to feed my snake rats rather than mice. She is probably old enough to eat rat fuzzies or pups now, but I dont know if it is a good idea to switch to rats at all. Is there any benefit to it? :shrugs:

Some corn snakes won't eat rats. As they are more expensive, why not stick to mice? My big guy eats 2 mice every other 10 days and 1 mouse the other 10 days.

I did a search on that once but can't remember what it said. I'm now up to nine corns so I raise my mice. If you have one and the cost doesn't kill go for it. Here mice are $1.00 and rats are $4.00. My big guy is well over 600 gr. he is four years old and has eaten a rat fuzzy once and hamsters when I had them, now mice. susan

I don't think theres much in it really, when it comes to nutritional differences. I feed Jake weaner rats because hes a big snake, and 1 adult mouse isn't really a sufficient meal for him and its less convenient to feed 2. So he gets a weaner rat every 10 days.

Where I buy them from, small adult mice are £1.20, large adult mice are £1.40 and my weaner rats aer £1.50 - so not really any more expensive.

From what I understand, rats are actually more fatty.
So yes your snake will grow but if you're not careful they may grow out.

I agree with Corny Noob and Beanie both. The rats can be beneficial for snakes who have grown beyond the size of mice, and thus it kind of acts like the step up from pinkies to fuzzies. However, if it's not necessary, I wouldn't feed rats. From what I've researched they contain a much higher fat content to go with their nutrition, and though they may be the appropriate size, they could cause your snake to gain too much weight. Also, as others pointed out, rats tend to cost more and aren't really practically if unnecessary.

One thing I wondered myself though is if the nutritional and fattening quality of the rats might help bring back a severely underweight snake. It would seem that if the snake ate the rats it would probably help it put on some healthy weight for a bit.

Anyways, hope that this is useful for you. ;)
