Mites on mice

Hello to all. This weekend I went to a small reptile show in Ft. Lauderdale. I picked up some live pinkies, fuzzies and hopper mice. Upon getting home and proceeding to feed them to my corns, I noticed tiny red bugs (looked like little crabs) probaly mites. Questions are, what are they, will they infest my corns, and how do you get rid of them. Thanks REG

I don't know about them but I'm sure you don't want to feed them to your corns. Maybe freezing will work. Good luck.

Hmm..red mites don't sound good. Either they're harmless spider mites, which infest plants and sometimes substrate..or they're true snake mites which could pose a problem.

The mites I've noticed on some of my breeder/feeder mice are white/clear and soft-bodied. The snake mites I've seen on one of my new snakes is a hard-bodied creature that "crunches" when squished.

I would definately freeze all of your feeder rodents prior to feeding for at least a week or more to prevent the spread of whatever they might be. Then I would clean anything to which those mice would have been in contact with with a bleach solution just to be doubly sure. Burn the litter they were on as well.
