i use coco fiber but i'm wondering what everyone else uses . i leave my hides in the tanks 24/7 they go in and out all the time. i'm wondering how well moss holds the water has anyone used the coco fiber and the moss for a comparison? thanks gail

I too use moist hides 24/7, but I just use moistened papertowels.

The reason I really like papertowels is there is no risk of accidental ingestion and they dry out fairly quick, preventing bacterial growth. Drying out quick could be considered a disadvantage, but I don't mind rewetting them when needed.

sphagum moss

how is the moss for retaining moitness? have u ever used the coco fiber? i'm asking for comparison reasons. thanks gail

paper towels

i have a 4 ft. snake that's alot of paper towels . they are more sanitary though. i have a real natural setup in his tank so i'll probably stick with the moss or coco fiber. thanks ,gail

Bark sunstrate

Around here all we can buy is this Ecco-Bark stuff... guess its just the bark off of paper mill trees.. this stuff safe or do I use... dun dun dun... astro-turf?

I also use sphagnum moss, but not in moist hides. I have actually never seen the need . . . yet . . . to offer a moist hide to any of my snakes for shedding purposes. I use my sphagnum moss in my egg laying boxes. In the cage for approx. 3-4 weeks total, I may have to open them up once and give them a good misting to keep the moisture up. I use rubbermaid super savers . . . cheap plastic containers approx $2-3 for two . . . with a 2" hole cut in the lid. It's the x-large super saver about 12" long and 8" wide. (numbers are just a guess right now as I don't have them handy to give exact info.) I personally like the sphagnum moss, and have had no reason/desire to try anything else at this time.

The moss retains moistness well. I have never used coco fiber.

I asked around about moss to use in a humid hide, and just about everyone told me they have to rewet it every couple days (dries out too fast) and change it every couple weeks.

I use Forest Bed (coconut fibers). It keeps a solid humidity level for about a week (before it starts to drop) and is bacteria and mold resistant. Because I keep it damp all the time though, I bake it every so often just to be sure.

I've never used moss, but I know some people will use nothing else. :)

Spirit...is the opening to your hide on the top or the side? All of my moist hides have the opening on the side. Maybe that's why mine stay pretty moist. As the water evaporates, it condenses on the lid and falls back down, keeping the moss wet longer.
