I'm sorry I'm going to have many questions I think.

Brief backstory: I just got a corn snake from a family that no longer wanted him. This is my first corn snake.

1) he is 85grams but not positive on length. He is currently in the 10gal tank he came in. I have a 29gal that I plan on moving him into when I can buy a large enough UTH. Does he need that tank sooner rather than later?
2) I've noticed talk about thermometers. What came with the tank was this suction cup one that says heat and humidity. Is there a more accurate one I should purchase? This one falls off the glass.
3) he doesn't seem to ever come out. He just hides all the time. Should he come out during the day?

Thank you in advance.

They need a bigger viv as a rule of thumb when they're about as long as the front plus a side of the viv. Mainly the viv needs enough room for at least two adequate hides, plus a water bowl. Off the top of my head 85g in a 10 gallon doesn't sound unreasonable.

There are cheap digital probed thermometers. Someone will come recommend one sold in the USA I'm sure.

It's normal to hide during the day and fine if they don't too. You will find that she will go through periods of activity and periods of hiding.

Welcome! I'm glad this corn went to a good home :)

1) I would move him as soon as you have the tank ready. He should be okay for now, but would be happier in the 29 gal.

2) You should get a thermostat to regulate the UTH's temperature:

Also, get a temperature probe for each side of the cage, cold side and warm side. These are pretty cheap. Here is the type I got: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008SJ1H7A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00

3) He may still be getting used to his surroundings. I don't see my snake much during daylight hours. He's much more active around dusk and dark.

Thank you guys!!

Is a 29 going to be large enough for his entire life or will he eventually need a bigger tank? I don't have money for a bigger tank but if it is something he will need I can start putting money aside now. I assume I have sometime before he needs something bigger.

A 20 gallon long tank is the minimum size an adult corn should live in, so a 29 gallon should be fine. You may find that after 4 or 5 years, it just doesn't seem big enough anymore, so you can always go larger. My largest female has a 40 gallon tank, but the rest of mine are in 20 gallon tanks.

My adults are in one 30 and two 40s. Once you get up to 40 gallons, space becomes a problem for trying to find somewhere to put them! You can always keep an eye on Craigslist or whatever for a great deal on a used one, if you're not in a hurry. Especially if they've been used for fish and not reptiles, as there is a small risk of disease that can't be eliminated with bleach.

Well when he needs much bigger I'll just buy a brand new tank. I can save at that point for a new one. I have a 29 that did have fish in it but that was years ago and the earliest was a rat but even that was two years ago. But it might make more sense to watch for a used one.

My 29 has a black stand for it. I'm not sure what to do for a stand for bigger! Haha.
