Motley and Stripe?

Hello,

Just picked up my first corn snake at a reptile store last week and he was labeled as a motley anery... but he's awfully stripey! I know that stripe is an entirely different gene, but my question is whether his patterns will change as he sheds and grows, into the more typical ladder-style motley, or if he will always be doing his strange stripey thing (I of course think he's beautiful either way ;))...

Thanks!
Annie

but he's awfully stripey! I know that stripe is an entirely different gene,

They are both due to the same gene, but they are caused by different alleles. For a simplified example: eye color and hair color (in humans) are determined by different genes while blue versus brown and blonde versus brown, respectively, are different alleles.

That's what is called a striped-motley (or some such variation). It is genetically a motley, but it may or may not have that look due (at least in part) to being het for the striped allele. In other words, it may or may not be a CARRIER for stripe. That looks is often due (but not always) to a motley having the stripe gene in the mix.
