Mouse parts look odd...

Hi guys

I have trying to breed a pair of feeder mice for a little while now, first couple of litters were mostly eaten by mother but the last one was a relatively good crop of about 10.
A while back (can't remember if it was pre or post last litter) I noticed that mouse mother's privates were quite red and swollen (to me looked like a strawberry), at the time I put it down to her being in heat as I think I read somewhere that they can get engorged there when ready for mating.
Last night I was cleaning out their cage and when I looked at the mother her nether parts were much worse, it almost looked like her insides were bulging outside, looked like a red mushroom protruding about 3-4 mm from her body.
It doesn't seem to be bothering her to move around or anything??
Has anybody seen this before? should I be worried? what can I do? are her breeding days done?

Thanks everyone.
Graeme

Sounds like she could have a uterine or bladder prolapse. I suppose a vet could repair it. Her breeding days are done. Poor mousie.

Poor thing. Her breeding days are over, probably her life as well.
Please make her end a humane one.

Something like that happened with one of mine, it was a baby that was stuck. It was already dead so gently removed it with tweezers. She still died though, I had a couple that had similar issues, they couldn't seem to have their babies and they all died. I don't know what caused it, some were young, some were prime experienced mothers. That may not be the issue with yours but it does seem like her days are over.

I had one of my mother rats have this happen to her after giving birth. Thank goodness she is the only one I have ever have this happen because it looks like such a horrible, painful thing to go through. I think it had a lot to due with her breeding back-to-back. I now make sure to cycle my females and make sure to never leave a male with a female right after giving birth to prevent too soon of a pregnancy.

I keep my rats separated by gender as soon as they look pregnant, and about 3 weeks after the babies are weaned i reintroduce the male so that they have time to regain weight from the nursing babies, as well as to prevent overbreeding.
