Moving to Texas!...with a few ?'s

Wow, it's been quite a while since I've been able to contribute much around the forum! Hopefully, I'll be able to get back more frequently here before long. I graduated undergrad and then spent 10 days in the Black Hills and then 3 weeks in Mexico (and I've got a few field herping pics to share, when I get time!).

I'm actually going to be moving to Texas in about 5 days and starting a PhD in biology at Texas A&M this fall. I've decided to leave all my big stuff (furniture) behind for the move and buy stuff when I get to Texas. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on making the furniture buying process as cost-effective as possible. Any native Texans with insights on local furniture stores would be awesome, but any general suggestions will be welcomed! I've moved about 4 times in as many years during undergrad but always within the same town and never had to completely furnish any of my places.

I'm really looking forward to getting settled into my new place and off of dial-up internet so I can start visiting more often again :D Thanks for looking and for any suggestions you can share :)

My advice isn't Texan, but it is graduate studentan. The IKEAs located in Texas are in Round Rock, Frisco, and Houston. Don't remember where A&M is, but since IKEA furniture comes all packaged in small boxes for you to assemble at home, I'd make the drive in whatever car you have.

I'm a student - and I actually if you can wait a bit for the less important things e-bay is an awesome place to look - and oddly enough walmart and target have some nice things. Worth checking out anyway! Good luck with the move!

I agree with Ikea - I love that place.

If you don't mind used items, get a yahoo email, search for and join the local Freecycle groups. A lot of people give away furniture as they don't want to bother moving it out. Also, craigslist.com is a great place to find furniture.

I agree...eBay, Target, and Wal-Mart are great...so are craigslist.org and Freecycle.org.

Ikea is super cheap. Frisco is about 4 hours north of College Station, but totally worth it.

Will you be driving through the Dallas/Fort Worth area? There are TONS of furniture stores around here...lots of huge outlet stores and little no-name places. There's also a chain called Unclaimed Freight that is popular around here. And another called Big Lots. You might try some of the flea markets that you will pass on your way to CS. It's all cheap "starter" furniture, but I doubt anyone would expect a grad student to have an apartment full of Ethan Allen and Pottery Barn, right? ;)

Whatever you do...do NOT finance an entire apartment's furnishings. It is so not worth it.

I don't think I'll be coming down through Dallas, but my travel agenda isn't set yet.

Thanks for the ideas, everybody. While I don't plan to spend a fortune, I am willing to splurge a wee bit since I will be able to keep this stuff for at least 5 years and I'll actually be getting paid for school. However, if I can find the same decent stuff at discount places, I'm certainly going to look for the best deals I can hunt down.

I love Ikea.

Incidentally, I turned down a grad appointment to Texas A&M to work with bull sharks in the gulf. In favor of teaching. So we could have been students together at A&M, because I probably would still have been there!!

I have an aunt in Houston, Seabrook actually, and I will send her an email and ask where the best places to get cheap furniture are. Remember, cinder blocks and boards are VERY useful.

That would have been cool if you were there. You mean you wouldn't have been teaching at A&M? I will be on a TA for at least my first year or two. I would really appreciate you contacting your aunt. It's nice to have local knowledge whenever possible. Thanks :)

Congrats on moving to TX. Yeah, IKEA is awesome. The closest one would either be Round Rock or Houston, both are about 2 hrs away from College Station. Pruddock on the board goes to A&M, you might try contacting him.
