Munson Plan Question

Well i have been following The Munson Plan and my lil snake has been on the double pinks but now he is 25 grams and it's time to bump him up to small fuzzies. Problem is that i get my mice at petsmart and i looked at the fuzzies in the container and they look way to big for him to eat.......more than 1.5 times the width of my snake. Would it be ok for me to feed him 3 pinks temporarily until he gets a little thicker to eat the fuzzies?

Thanks, Daniel

You might look around and see if there is anywhere else that you can go. You can always check bigcheese factory, LLL Reptiles, and Rodent Pro that all have mice avalible for order online. Granted you have to buy bulk (say 100) but you can mix and match sizes if you wanted. You will also pay MUCH less. Rodent pro is like .16 a mouse and LLL is .60 or so

The reason I mentioned looking for another source is so that you could find a more appropriate sized prey item. If worse comes to worse there is the weight of the food guideline on the Munson plan you could follow that as well and if 3 pinkies are equal to the weight of food a 25 gram snake needs you should be good to go.

Good morning manos238!!!

I think feeding 3 pinkies is a roll of the dice. At this point it becomes a question of stomach length instead of stomach girth. Plus that's a lot of pinkie, volume wise, for your little guy to try to digest.

I would suggest feeding 2 pinkies which will provide plenty of nutrition, without taxing his stomach, until you are able to procure the correct size fuzzies.

Regards,
Steve

I always feed my Eastern Hoggy three prey items, because I have to assist feed and it's just easier to get smaller stuff down. I haven't had a problem in a year of feeding triples.

It is recommended to never feed more than two prey items at a time...it does become a risk.

As Sane suggested, I would look for another supplier...are you buying every week or are you able to keep appropriate size prey in the freezer? If so, I would buy a whole lot of the right size prey at a time. :)

Recommended by who?

I feed Jake two mice one week and three mice the next week. The owners before me, Jay and PJ, who are certainly experienced, reputable breeders, are the ones who put him on that diet because he won't eat rats. He's done fine and never had a problem for years. Plus, if anyone else that evening doesn't eat, Jake gets 1-3 more small mice as well!

Snakes, in the wild, are opportunistic feeders. If they come across a nest, they aren't going to stop at two...

Nanci,

How large is he???

She's right around 100 grams. I feed her three 5-7 gram fuzzies weekly.

Jake is 970 grams. He eats three adult 25+ gram mice weekly.

manos2381,

I noticed you're from Indiana.

American Rodent Supply (http://www.americanrodent.com/) is located in Indianapolis. I know they regulary attend shows and will be at the NARBC show (http://www.narbc.com/) in Tinley Park (Chicago), IL on Oct. 13th and 14th. I have never used them but have heard good things and am going to give them a try.

I’m working with Brian right now on a order to be picked up at the show on Saturday.

Regards,
Steve

Well Nanci...we all know Jake is a hog ;)

At 100 grams I would feel more comfortable feeding 3 prey items than to a snake that is only 25 grams. That's not to say it can't be done, because obviously you're doing it successfully

I am by NO means an expert and tend to be very conservative is my husbandry practices.

Regards,
Steve

Well, I'm not trying to be argumentative, just providing anecdotal evidence that in all my cases of feeding triple prey, I have not had a problem. Addy was 16 grams when I started with her, BTW.

I thought of another. Choco won't eat big mice- he gags them back out. He always gets an equivalent double, and sometimes an equivalent triple if I am out of his size.

I've purchased from American Rodent at the Tinley show the past two years; good product, but their prices are still a little higher than RodentPro, which is also based in Indiana (Inglefield).

I didn't see them on the list of vendors for the NARBC show.

Not that there is anything wrong with Rodent Pro, but that's why I didn't mention them.

On orders over $100, which isn't too hard to do, American Rodent does offer free shipping to about 1/2 of the country and discounted shipping to the rest.

Steve

Correct, Rodent Pro won't be at Tinley. The list the shows they'll be at on their site.

Doesn't really matter to me, since I now plan on feeding live after boppin' 'em on the head.

Depending on where you're at in Indiana, there's a local breeder that is quite good. He supplies to the Indianapolis Zoo and he's been in the business for years. He's got all sizes of rats and mice.

He's located outside of Mooresville (Brooklyn) which is southwest of Indianapolis about 25 minutes.

If you're close to there, I can give you his phone number if you'd like. .

That would be sweet man!! I live right by Mooresville in Plainfield. I'd definately take the #

Thanks all, Daniel

Maria, my '05 MBK, was eating adult mice, and even ate a jumbo once, then one day she "decided" that she would no longer accept anything larger than a weaned mouse. She's around 500g, so I don't know what her problem is (or if it's really a problem). Now she gets three weaneds every 8-10 days.
