Musking!?

Ok, I've had my snow corn for a few short days now. Before that I had a california kingsnake that just wouldn't eat so I exchanged it for a snow corn that I knew of someone that was wanting to get rid of it. Anyways, it seems like everytime I scare it when I am picking it up that it "musks" me and by this I mean it sprays out some sort of very smelly liquid. I've also been told that they only will musk if the snake is a male. Can anyone please clarify this? :shrugs:

Thanks,
David

All corns have scent glands, both males and females. They musk when they are scared. I would let your new Snow settle down into its viv, and not handle it for at least a week. Its had a big environment change, so it needs time to get used to that, without you bothering it. Musk is gross, but its also a totally natural defense mechanism.

Thank you! I knew that it had to be both in the males and females. I've let it get used to it's environment pretty well I don't bother it unless cleaning up poop or feeding it or changing the water. :)

Hi David,

I will echo what Becky! Also, when she says leave the snake alone, it's totally alone. Put your new snakes in their viv and don't open the lid for at least 4 or 5 days, and then only to refresh water. I always wait at least a week to handle them or disturb their enviornment.

I know it's hard - it's exciting to get a new snake. But believe me, a good start paves the way for good interactions, good feeds and so on.

Good Luck and cograts on the new Snow :D Mine is the sweetest snakes I've got... I love her to death!

Another thing, did you put it into the same viv you had your king snake in? If so, it might be smelling a little bit of king snake scent, which could be making it more jumpy. If you haven't already done so, I'd recommend you clean the tank thorougly with vinegar or bleach and water, including all the decorations and stuff in it.

Otherwise, just give it time.

Yeah I had already cleaned it out and everything, didn't even put in the same decor. It'll come around I am sure it's just gotta acclimate.
