My Christmas Present...

...Is FINISHED!

My new economy plastics rack from animal plastics is finished. I worked on it a few hours yesterday and a little today!

The third, fourth, and fifth pictures are showing the probe. Which one would be the best place to put it? In the third picture I have set it on the top shelf and the tip of the probe is touching the heat cable. The fourth and fifth are showing a slot that is present on all six shelves. When the probe is in there is it not directly touching the heat cable. That may be made for the probe but would it be safer to have it directly touching it?

Thanks everyone and pictures of the snakes in their new homes are coming soon!

Wow...very nice. :) Someone had been a good boy in 2007! :santa:

The thing that struck me, though, is how *neat* your room appears -- when I was 15, my room was rather a disaster...nice work.

Dave, how I set mine up is with the probe directly on the cable, then in the top bin, (this is less of a hassle if you have an empty [but set up like a snake would be in it] bin for a control) I have a thermometer probe taped directly over the cable, in the bin, and in the second bin down I have the probe taped a couple inches out from the cable, but in the warm hide. I have the Herpstat set on 92F, which gives me readings of 86.7 over the cable, in the viv, and 79.7 in the warm hide, not directly over the cable. At this time. My two max temps are 89.2 and 83.1, and my two min temps are 83.3 and 74.7. I can't even imagine what would be going on with an on/off thermostat, not a proportional. I seem to have fluctuation with the time of day, getting overall cooler readings in the morning, and the warmest in the late afternoon. I probably should write to Dion (owner of Spyder Robotics) to see if he can suggest a setting change to minimize that swing.

Looks great Dave! Do you love it?

Thank you all!

Yea, I always try to keep it clean because there are always people in the house. With the snakes it has been a little dirtier than my mom would like. (clean freak). :flames:

Thanks for the info, Nanci. I am still trying to figure out how to set it to drop at night. I guess I have to read the instructions again! And yes I love it so far! Best part is that I can get more snakes to fit in it. ;)

How come you want it to drop at night?

And don't you have the original Herpstat, not the night drop? So you need a separate night drop cable, right? Do you have that?

Well do I want it to stay the same all day and night? I am not going to buy a cooler cable...too much of a hastle. I was thinking of just lowering the set temperature before I go to bed.

Congrats on the Christmas present!:)

I have heat tape (back heat), for heating my racks, and the thermostat probe is set inside the back panel (not touching the tape but next to it). It is placed between the top shelf and the middle shelf.
I, also, have a thermometer probe inside a top tub, a middle tub, and a bottom tub.
Racks can vary but I have found that there is very little fluctuation (from top to bottom), in temps, with my racks ... at most, there may, sometimes, be a difference of 1-2 degrees (esp. with taller rack).

Do snakes, cornsnakes, even need or benefit from a nightly drop in temperature? That's when they are out- they don't want to be cold! I think night drop is for desert lizards, to simulate what happens in nature, since it is so much more extreme. Plus, they are holed up and sleeping till the sun comes out.

Thanks!!! I didn't think that there would be a big difference in the temperature of each shelf.

Yea, the temperature remained at a good 84-86 last night. That sound good?

Measured where?

I have the probe that is attached to the thermostat in the probe slot and I have another thermometer that is separate and that is in the first bin over where the heat cable is. That one reads a few degrees less probably because the heat has to travel through the sterlite bin. Maybe I should have the target temperature a little more...its 85 now.
