My first (and definitely not last) snake

Hi =] My name is Kylah and I just got my first pet reptile (a corn snake, obviously) a couple of months ago at the end of February. I named my snake Charlie, as I needed a unisex name since he/she/it was born in July 2010 and cannot be sexed yet. I hope that it turns out to be a male, though, as all of my other pets thus far have ended up being female. [How do all of you decide what gender to call your snake before it has been sexed? Or do you even bother taking it in to find out?]

I have wanted to keep reptiles as pets for as long as I can remember, but everyone in my family is scared of them >.< So now that I live on my own and am about to graduate college I just decided to go for it and after doing my research I purchased my baby corn snake from the local pet store. Charlie has beautiful coloring and I was informed that during his entire six-month stay at the pet store he never once struck at an employee or potential buyer. Charlie has an amazing temperament and is quite curious and active, so I feel comfortable taking him out of his tank multiple times a day oftentimes. He now readily crawls up onto my hand/wrist and wraps around to be taken out whenever I open up his tank, unless he is in the process of shedding or has just eaten. I'm so happy that my first snake is one with such a good temperament!

Anyway, I didn't mean to write such a long introduction but the initial excitement still hasn't worn off from when I first purchased Charlie. I meant to write my introductory message 1.5 months ago when I first found this website, but I've been so busy with school that I kept forgetting and just now got around to it! I have many random questions about others' corn snakes and personal experiences, so I'm sure I'll be talking to a lot of you in the near future.

=]

Hey kylah, welcome to the forum. That is a good looking snake, and yes it wont be your last!

I started with 1 now i have over 20.

What is that your using as bedding?

A corn snake can actually be sexed when they are young. You can take Charlie to a reptile vet to be probed, and then you will know for sure what sex s/he is!

Charlie is very pretty!

Most baby corns can be probed or 'poped' therefore finding out what sex it is.
That is a very colourful Classic you have there.

Mine haven't been probed yet. One I just call her because she feels like a girl. I wont ever breed her, so I don't care her gender. The one I may breed one day needs to be probed, I got it as a male now thinking she's a female from the shape of the tail. Snakes are referred to with numbers such as 1.2.3. The first number represents the males in your collection, the second number are the females, and the third category is for all the unknown snakes. I would write my corn snake collection as 0.0.2 since I have two snakes with unconfirmed gender. Yet I still call them both girls because their tails are short.
