My frozen mice just arrived and ...

I received my first order of frozen mice and there was a tear in the bag containing them. I put the whole bag in a ziploc freezer bag and put it in the freezer as soon as I got it (I was here to accept the delivery) so I did not really take the time to inspect them, but from my initial observation it looked like some (at least one or two) may have cracked open along their side. I was at first mostly concerned with freezerburn but now that I think about it it could make the thawing process a bit messy.

Do you think I am better off returning the shipment, or should they be ok (I got 100 so if I need to toss some I can live with that). The company was one of the few that I have seen recommended here so from what I understand they would take care of me, I am just curious in regards to what experienced owners would recommend.

Thanks

Call the company and they should take care of the situation. They were damaged and you should get what you paid for.

By your discription it almost sounds like your bag cought caught by a box cutter or something. :shrugs:
It it were me I'd throw out the cut ones, keep the rest, call the company and expect some sort of discount on my next order.

They won't ask you to return them. What size mice are they? If the cuts aren't deep, you might be able to thaw them. And if they leak a little, your snake won't care! I feed cut in half mice all the time! But the company ought to replace damaged product.

Ok thanks for the help, I called and left a message and emailed them. It could have possible been a boxcutter, but if it so it definitely happened on their end as the mice were completely surrounded by the insulation type material it was shipped in. That would make sense because I have read a lot of the testimonials complimenting the company on the mice being recieved intact without broken limbs etc., and at first glance it looked like some legs and tails were missing.
Hopefully they get back to me soon, although I expect to able to use most all of them still. I was mostly concerned with whether this would compromise their "shelf life" or nutrititional value (due to freezerburn etc.). According to the website they are "small pinkies" with the following dimensions (not including tails):
Length (Inches): 0.50 - 1.00
Weight (Grams): 1.90 - 2.40

It is good to know that they won't be expecting me to send them back, as that seems like it would be a little bit of an inconvenience.

I didn't mean to double post, but the company returned my call just now (about 10-20 minutes after i called and emailed which is kind of surprising) and said that it was most likely the bag becoming too brittle from the dry ice it was packed next to and tearing open. All of the contents are still inside the bag, and after looking more carefully the tear really doesn't look straight or uniform enough to be an actual cut from a sharp edge. The did not really volunteer any sort of reiumbursement, but I think that I should be able to use most all of them (even if one or two end up a little messy - I don't think Malachai will mind). I was little bit surprised that so many had lost their legs (only because I see so many "they were all intact w/ no broken limbs" testimonials), but I was given the impression from their Customer Service rep that this is pretty normal.

I rebagged them and tucked them away in the freezer, so I am not going to worry about it - although it does give me some incentive to try out other leading competitors.

I can tell by your description that you didn't use my favorite mouser, but that is neither here nor there. With pinkies, it is really common to be missing some arms and legs. They break off pretty easily when they are that small.

I wouldn't worry about some of the mice having "splits". I've never seen that but I can't imagine that it would distract from the quality of the food. I would feed them off first however.
