My heat is screwed up....

Warning you now that I'm doing many things wrong so please don't insult, just help. I know I'm a bad snake momma.

So I have her in a 10 gallon with a small UTH, zoomed I think. For the first few days I was scared it was too cold, because my strip thermometers told me so, and I was worried because she was spending all her time on the cold side. So I found a meat thermometer to really test the temp, and at the glass it was 125!!! So I unplugged the heater right away. My air temp is 77 so she won't freeze and die... I've been turning in her heater for some time so she doesn't freeze. I know I need a thermostat but I can't find one and don't have the money to buy one, I'm saving up as fast as I can. The god thing is, eponine seems smart enough to go to the cool side, right next to her water dish, when it gets too hot.

So the point is, what would be a good temporary solution to my temp problem? Please help me!

I would just leave the UTH unplugged (and don't feed) til you can get a thermostat or a reostat.

Check on Amazon for a Hydrofarm thermostat, I think they are around $30 right now so they should have free shipping.

You could go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a lamp dimmer (reostat) for $15'ish they aren't as stable as a thermostat though and if the temp in the room fluctuates at all you'll need to check your in tank temp and adjust the switch up or down accordingly.

Mobile right now, hopefully that all made sense.

I'm not trying to insult, I just want to mention you had asked a similar question about heating a while ago and myself and a couple others mentioned about heating and thermostats and thermometers. You said you can't find one but I specifically mentioned Pisces has them right now! As in, I was there yesterday and they have thermostats AND digital thermometers, the cost of which together is about $40. It is just off of Deerfoot on McKnight. These things are what you should have BEFORE you buy your snake. 125F with a meat thermometer (which I wouldn't trust) is scary hot for a corn! Please if you need help finding something, just ask! I know pretty much where to find anything pet related in Calgary!

Eponine I will be the first to say I know sometimes it is hard to come up with money. My little one is in a 5 gallon with paper towels and some diy hides. Heat and food are the two things that kind of have to be handled up front. I'm not going to beat you up about it because you seem concerned and that you want to get it right. This is a link to a diy rheostat to control the amount of electricity your uth will get.

This is the cheapest solution I have seen on any of the forums I'm on. But I wouldn't use it long term.

Okay I now have a thermostat! Just wondering... How do I put the probe in there? I've heard use foil tape, I have some of that, but what do I tape down? Over the probe? How much of the cord? Any help with the probe would be great, thanks!

I'm not sayin anything wong with it most people just say not to put tape of any kind in the viv because snakes usually find a way to get under it. I could be wrong.

Never put tape in the viv!! I don't care how strong it seems like it will be! It'll come up, and then you'll have one heck of a mess getting it off your snake.

No tape! I made this mistake too and though Floyd didn't get stuck before I removed it, I wouldn't want to risk it now. I had used Gorilla tape which is also very strong, but as I said once Christen warned me of the dangers, I just wouldn't want to risk it.

What is the difference between a seedling heat mat and one that is specified for reptiles? They are much cheaper! Says warms 10-20 degrees above room temp.... sounds about right.. ?? thoughts?

Question, what do they consider "room temp"? I've never owned a seedling heat mat, but I would just stick with ones made for reptiles to be on the safe side.

If you've ever had to peel a 6 inch strip of duct tape, off a 7 inch snake (Tip of jaw down), realizing your snake is in incredible pain, scales peeling off, jaw disconnected... You would never, under any circumstances put anything sticky inside(or outside for that matter) your snakes enclosure..

^ Wow, that alone almost makes me tear up thinking about what the snake was put through. Ouch... hopefully recovered well and is doing ok.

Lor, is this Seedling one a human heat pad? Doesn't look like one, but outside of ones for Reptiles and Humans I don't know what other ones are out there. Looks interesting.

I stumbled on that heat pad when I searched Amazon for the Hydrofarm thermostat. That is actually a Seedling thermostat too. lol. I assume they are basically the same...
