So I wanted a snake to go with my gecko (not in same habitat or ::eatsmiley) and did the research over the past month which lead me to the corn snake. This site is fantastic for that and I use a site like this for my gecko and jeep Cherokee (like having a pet with all the care it needs lately). So I set up my habitat to stabilize temps and all I needed was the snake... I was thinking about ordering on online this past week when I googled reptile expo in pa and viola! it just so happened that my area had a reptile expo yesterday only 20 minutes away. Set my sites on a sunkissed or some kind of striped, but no albinos. Basically I wanted orange or a stripe or both.
Got up early, made sure my temps and humidity were good, and on my way. Had no idea what to expect at a reptile expo I have never been to one but was I surprised at the turn out and was waiting in the rain in line for about 20 minutes at 10:00 am, and the show started at 9am! Didn't realize this. Wow was I amazed when I walked in that door and if I didn't do my research and planning I probably would have walked out of there with some kind of python I wasn't ready or had planned for. So any noobs reading this make sure you have a plan or you'll be there forever.
There were a lot of rats, kings and of course boas and pythons but not too many vendors had corns, and if they did they were normal, albino, or not the color I wanted. Only 2 had stripes: 1 had a lavender stripe (wrong color) and an albino stripe which I didn't want so I made my way around the show soaking it in as far as getting to see first hand what I only saw online shopping. Some of these snakes are unreal looking, and even the frogs were cool, hard to imagine them as far as size and color unless you see them first hand. I would recommend anyone new to get to a reptile show before you buy online just so you have a tangible memory of what these morphs look like and know what's out there in terms of lizards, inverts, snake morphs, and even the range of products down to feeders. After going to one I don't think I'll buy anything for my reptiles online or in a pet shop since it looks like there's a show at least every month or more in my area.
So far I couldn't find my color or morph but I almost went for a scorpion or another gecko till I finally happened upon a corn/rat snake guy. For moment I almost picked a pewter and orange diamond rat snake but it reminded me of the Tampa bay buccaneers. Amazing colored snake. He had the usual corns every one else had and plenty of albinos but then I saw the bloodred stripe...wow. Immediately I knew that's what I came for so I picked the one with the brightest stripe. He sexed it as a female and on the way home (hoping my pinkies wouldn't thaw...I did think about bringing a cooler and cold pack but forgot it in my excitement to leave..as well as umbrella or hoodie) I decided to name her Eclipse because she reminded me of a bloodred lunar eclipse, and it seems their colors change like the stages of a lunar eclipse over time. Perfect.
Got her home and let her slither around my arms until she decided to go into her enclosure. Didn't think about pics right away though when she was in her container all I wanted to do was get her out of it so I will post pics next week after she's acclimated and feeds for the first time.
