My snake Athena died today:(

Two Corns and Growing!
I don't know what happened she was a year old and I got her from susan, she ate last week and when I went to feed her this week she refused and it's pretty hot out here in NM so it's understandable well I went to go check her out today and there she was.. dead with her mouth open. I don't know... I still have Diabla and Athena was a little hateling but it gave her spunk. Just thought I'd let you guys know and just let myself vent.

Oh no, I'm sorry for your loss of Athena.

It's especially hard when they pass on so unexpectedly and young in age. How very strange.

Thank you:) It took me by suprise now I have to find the courage to pick her up and give her a burial. How would you bury a snake.. Anyone?

We put Milton in his snake bag and buried him under a butterfly bush, putting a large, concrete water dish over the top to keep the wild things out....

I'm sorry for your loss. I know exactly how it feels, and it isn't fun :-(.

Thank you I'll do that we have a rose bush in the front yard so I'll bury her under that. Hopefully next year we'll have pretty athena roses.

So sorry for your loss!

But how is your other snake doing? How hot is it in the area the snake is kept in? I find that they have trouble properly digesting their food if it is much over 90F, and 100F or so could be fatal.

They've both digested their food just fine I've never had regurge with them. I've always had a full bowl of water(big enough so if they need to lay in it they can) plenty of hides. Athena was kept in a 30 gallon tank with a lot of vines for cover, Diabla is in a tub with three cardboard hides and a big vine. At the most the temps go up to 84. Thats why this is so weird she ate fine last week and I find her dead the next.

Great! I was afraid you (and they) were at the mercy of NM summer weather. But sometimes you just never find out why something bad happened.

Lol I'm at the mercy of summer weather I work at the biopark all day but I try to keep it as cool for them(well diabla now) as I can in that room considering our a/c won't be fixed until next week. It probably is one of those weird things that happen for no reason.:shrugs:

Thank you I'm going to get the cooling fixed in this house fix the tank athena was in and probably get another normal or okatee(I think thats how you spell it)

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've lost a lot of snakes this year and it's devastating to me as well-I've never had so much as a sniffle in the 7 years I've been keeping snakes and now I've had 6 deaths. I especially hate not knowing why. Even with a necropsy and pathology done I was unable to have a real answer. The only thing I do know is that it wasn't crypto and it wasn't IBD. It's always horrible to have those things happen when everything appears to be perfect.

I'm sorry for your loss. I hate when loved animals die. Its hard, isn't it?
Hope your other snake stays healthy and strong.

Thanks guys it's getting better its just weird seeing her empty tank when I go to check on Diabla. I'm probably going to go snake shopping next week I know a good pet store(mom and pop shop) right down the street that knows their stuff.

Terribly sorry for your loss. I, too, lost an Athena. Bought her from Rob as a healthy, proven adult. I bred her, she produced a bunch of slugs, and just went downhill. I took her to the vet but he couldn't save her. A necropsy revealed two eggs in her, so maybe she was eggbound. But even he didn't really know what killed her. It's just the way it is when you have animals, unfortunately.
