I would not burn anything that emits smoke in the same room as your snake's viv (ie.cigarettes, incense). I have heard that smokeless candles (which are most candles) are fine. But, what is 'nag champa'? I am not familiar with it.

I would avoid burning in the same room, if it smokes like the 'common' incense sticks or cones. But if you must, yes, I would cover your viv with a towel or put a fan near the viv in order to push the smoke away from the snake.
