That snake didn't want to be cuddled...also, he was my first water snake capture! I picked him up a few times but he never quit biting.

I think I have only caught one water snake when I was a kid and would catch the things that wasn't a habitual biter. I caught one when I was a kid by diving after him to barely grab him by the tail between my fingers before he leaped into the water. Surprised the heck out of me that I could loosely carry him in my hands and he never once attempted to bite. I would have thought I would have scared the heck out of him and he would have responded with putting as many teeth into my skin as he could.

I guess you could raise up babies and have them cease biting, but water snakes, like black racers, just don't seem to be the kind of snake that many people are inclined to do that with.

Now speaking of black racers, I've found eggs in the wild (not knowing what they were from at the time) and hatched them out only to have baby black racers literally leap out of the eggs to bite me on the fingers. All in all, I really never liked black racers the least little bit.

Ha ha! First eggs I ever found were the same thing! And did the same thing!!!

I learned how to catch black racers a few years ago. I'm not afraid of their bites- it's worth it to catch them. I guess once I get bit by a water snake it will be the same.

Watersnakes mellow out pretty quickly. Mine has a huge feed response but isn't too bad once he quits freaking out. My racer isn't half bad either although he seems to have come out of his mellow coma and bit me last time. My coachwhip in contrast has not bitten once. I adore her! I've yet to get a hold of any of the watersnakes I've come across...they've either been too far down an embankment, out too far in the water or take off the minute you try to grab them.
