Need help with morph identification (1)

We just acquired two new cornsnakes, which are supposed to be "under a year old." I have no information about the parentage of either snake, but I'm trying to track that down through a prior owner. I've been looking at corn snake pictures online all day, and I think I'm even more confused than before I started. This first post will be pictures of Thor, who we think might be an anery or maybe a ghost? Can anyone help us figure out what we have?

I'll put pictures of the second snake in a separate post.

Thanks.

Annie and Jacob

It's nice to have good photos to work with when playing this game. Thor looks like a nice anery to me. I like the colorful ones. Some might speculate a ghost possibility based on his dorsal side, but I'd say his belly checkers don't look very ghost-ish.

Looks to be an anery to me also, a pretty one.. And I dont think that snake is under a year old, looks closer to an adult to me..

Roy can you tell me the difference between ghost and anery belly checkers? I would like to learn all I can and I dont know much about the belly patterns..

I'd have to agree with Elle and Dean and say it's an anery. There are some light anerys that are hard to tell from dark ghosts. The belly checkers are a clear black instead of washed out which is typical of ghosts (which are anery and hypo).

I concur...a very nice anery! And definately over a year old...unless Dean has been feeding it. And kudos on very nice pics to help identify the morph of your snake!

Some one care to post a compare belly shot? I would, but I am still amiss to whether I have big ghost girl or anery myself..

Thanks, everyone!

Thanks so much for the input. Looks like we have a consensus! I need to pick up a good reference for the genetics of the known morphs--any suggestions? I guess one of the interesting things about breeding snakes of unknown parentage is that you never know what might be lurking in there...

We weren't in the market for more snakes right now, but when we saw these two, we were quite smitten. Jacob has always liked the looks of the anerys/ghosts, but I always thought they were a bit drab compared to the normal corn coloration (but I'd only seen pictures.) Thor is anything but drab, however. The colors are subtle but so rich and, unlike some folks, I really like the yellow on the head and neck. And his markings are some of the most symmetrical I've ever seen on a corn.

Besides the three corns, we also have a pair of Cal Kings that are not quite old enough to breed yet. We haven't done any breeding at this point, but we're getting excited about the possibility in the future.

Thanks again! So glad we found the link to cornsnakes.com!

Nice summary of pics , Dean . How did you make this compositionpicture ??
Thanks Marc. I re-sized the individual photos in Microsoft Paint (where I do all of my resizing), and cut and pasted into another photo using Paint to edit the jpg.

Photoshop Pro will do the same thing. It was a lot easier in the earlier versions though :)

I really like the belly on that ghost in the left hand corner. That's a busy pattern :)

The 2006 Cornsnake Morph guide is really helpful wen you get into a jam with identification. Kathy Love may still have a few copies

That's kind of throwing me off as well. I suppose although they are kind of brown it is a pretty dark brown. I think I'll go with Anery A as well, but if you're interested in breeding in the future I think it would be worth a few breeding trials to find out for sure.

The reason most people's consensus is that your snake is over a year old is that head looks very mature. He may be underweight and passed off as under a year, but I doubt he's that young.

Great looking snake! Thor is stunning!

Thanks again, everyone, for all the input. Now if things were only as straightforward with Artemis, the corn in my belly scales post. Any additional input I could get on her would be greatly appreciated!

Thor really is a nice looking snake--won me over, that's for sure! Jacob liked the look of the anerys and ghosts right away, but it took Thor to make me take closer look and decide that they really are striking...

And he's a sweetheart, too!

Thanks again.
Annie
