need some royal python advice

CornDude

i know this is a corn snake forum but i didnt know where else to post.

i am getting a new royal python soon, and i want to give it the "oil bath" thing for mites. am i best doing this as soon as i get it (i dont think it will have mites, it just would be easier, for both me and the snake, to do this just incase, to make sure it doesnt) to avoid them infesting the viv or leave it to settle first?
cheers

also would it change ur decision if i could clearly see mites on the snake?

thanks

Have you ever had a Ball/Royal Python before?

Why does it have mites?

If it;s your first I HIGHLY suggest you do NOT purchase a snake with mites. Ball Pythons are shy, and take much longer than corns to acclimate to new surroundings in most cases. A snake that already has mites is an added problem and worry.

The snakes condition depends on when you treat. Obviously if its totally infested treat it right away. If you only THINK it has mites, wait and see if you are correct and let it settle in. That's what I would do, well I would avoided buying that one in the first place but if you still do thats my advice.

i am not going to buy a snake that has mites, i was mainly asking if you think i should do the treatment to be sure, to try to stop any mites that it could have getting oput of hand.
thanks for the advice.

Good idea! A better treatment is Nix. There's a very good article about it on the internet if you do a search on google. It can be used as a precaution on all new snakes (recommended) and at the least, you could spray it in a new enclosure prior to introducing the animal, to kill the mites and nits, this way not disturbing the snake at all. If you have any other snakes at all, you never know for sure if a new animal has mites, they are often times not noticed until after purchase. Of course, quarantine is also very important.

To treat the actual snake (mites will hide within the scales) rather than spraying them directly, you can spray it on your hands and let the snake slide through, or spray the nozzle upwards and allow it to fall like rain on the animal. I killed all mites and eggs on a corn, only spraying the snake in this manner once, mostly going with the cage treatment.

I agree, especially for a BP it'd be best not to disturb it for a while, hence the cage treatment. Of course it's better if you don't acquire a mite infested animal to begin with. It's no fun for you or the snake, but if you don't guess and treat it like it already has mites, you're much safer.

can you recomend any "all in 1" sprays available on the net and in the uk?
cheers
ps. 1s that you personally have tried and can guarentee being safe wud be a bonus.

You should be able to get Nix at your local drugstore for quite cheap, it's marketed for treating head lice. But you must dilute the solution according to the instructions for snake mites (you will only find this information on the internet). It is completely safe and extremely effective.

Unfortunately I'm not aware of any "all-in-one" sprays and have never used them. However, I believe someone posted recently about a spray intended for killing ectoparasites on this board if you want to have a look.

My local pet store has a mite treatment specifically for snakes. Try looking there.
